Richland County is a destination for trips where nature experiences, water, regional food and history come together. In southwestern Wisconsin, glacially unglaciated hills and narrow valleys shape the landscape. Green valleys, wooded bluffs and hills, as well as historic family farms, add to the scenery. The name Ocooch Mountains refers to Wisconsin’s unglaciated Western Upland, also known as the Driftless Region or Paleozoic Plateau, characterized by high hills, bluffs and ridges.

Nature Among Savannas, Forests and Rock Formations

The Gotham Jack Pine Barrens are a distinctive natural area. This 412-acre State Natural Area is owned by the DNR and lies within the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway in Richland County. It contains the county’s largest and best-preserved remaining black oak and jack pine savannas. Travelers who want to focus their trip on distinctive natural areas will find a clearly defined highlight here.

The Ash Creek Community Forest also offers concrete options for active days. Covering 350 acres, it is the largest park in Richland County. Its trail network includes four miles of easy hiking and biking trails. The community forest also includes a three-mile section of a Class 1 trout stream. This allows you to choose between a walk, a bike ride and time by a stream when planning your day.

Elephant Rock and Natural Bridge are geological formations in Richland County. At Pier County Park, a man-made tunnel passes through the rock formation to the West Branch of the Pine River. The unusual sandstone formation is half a mile long and rises nearly 60 feet above the floodplain of two converging valleys. Beneath it, the West Branch and Main Branch of the Pine River meet and form a Natural Bridge. Stairs lead up onto the rock formation and offer views of the surrounding landscape.

Rivers, Vineyards and Regional Products

For days on the water, Orion Boat Landing has parking for cars and boat trailers. It provides boats and canoes with access to the Wisconsin River. Canoeing is possible on the Pine River.

A visit to Wild Hills Winery offers a different experience. The property covers 80 acres of woodland, fields and carefully tended vineyards. Activities include snowshoeing, walks through the vineyards and hands-on experiences. The Richland Area Farmers Market complements this regional offering with food and fresh flowers. Products include seasonal fruit and vegetables, baked goods, meat, eggs, honey, maple syrup and preserved foods.

Cultural History for Curious Explorers

There are also notable places to visit beyond the landscape and waterways. The A.D. German Warehouse was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1915; construction continued until 1921. The Akey School Museum houses hundreds of artifacts from many of the 110 one-room schools that operated in Richland County during the 1930s. This allows you to expand your stay to include architectural or educational history.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Itinerary

Before searching for a vacation rental or holiday home, decide which experiences should be the focus of your trip: forests and rock formations, river activities, vineyard experiences, market visits or cultural history. When choosing your base in Richland County, you can then use this itinerary as a guide. If your travel group has different interests, setting a clear priority can help connect your accommodation decision with your preferred travel rhythm, rather than searching only by a general place name.
