Pierce combines impressive river landscapes with unusual nature experiences and a variety of destinations. Between the Mississippi, Lake Pepin, and the river valleys of the Kinnickinnic River, you will find opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, water sports, and special discoveries underground. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worth considering first which side of Pierce should shape your trip: active days on trails and mountain biking routes, observations in protected habitats, or excursions on the water and into caves.

Caves, Miniature Golf, and Gemstones

Crystal Cave offers a one-hour guided hike through the cave. The cave is one mile long, making it the longest cave in Wisconsin. You can also pan for gemstones at Prospector’s Creek. An 18-hole dinosaur-themed miniature golf course rounds out the attractions. This combination creates different options for an outing when not everyone in your group is looking for the same focus. Those traveling with children can treat the underground tour, panning, and miniature golf course as separate activities without having to structure the day around just one activity.

Forests, Prairies, and the Kinnickinnic River

At Kinnickinnic State Park, river landscapes meet varied terrain. The park is located at the confluence of the St. Croix River and the Kinnickinnic River. About 9.2 miles of trails through hills, forests, and prairies are available for hiking. Those who prefer cycling will find more than 10 miles of singletrack mountain biking trails there. More than 140 bird species have been documented as breeding birds in the Kinnickinnic River valley during the breeding season. Nature observation can therefore be combined with a more active day plan here.

The protected river areas also showcase a variety of landscapes. The Kinnickinnic River Gorge and Delta encompasses an undisturbed river gorge with diverse plant communities. The area includes Devil’s Mixing Bowl, where cascades flow from a deep box canyon into a small pool. The large, semi-open delta formed at the mouth of the Kinnickinnic River where it meets the St. Croix River. In the Rush River Delta, a floodplain forest protects the floodplain at the mouth of the Rush River where it flows into the Mississippi River or, more precisely, Lake Pepin. A sandbar extends into Lake Pepin there and provides shorebirds with feeding and nesting areas.

Water Experiences and Practical Orientation

The Eau Galle Recreation Area encompasses a 139-acre reservoir. On the Eau Galle Reservoir, boating is permitted exclusively with boats without gasoline-powered motors. The Eau Galle Main Day Use Area has a sandy beach for swimming, a boat ramp, and a fishing pier. From I-94, you can reach this area via Exit 24 and County Road B. Such specific access information can help with day planning when you want to use a vacation rental as a base for various activities.

Other water and nature destinations add to the picture: Nugget Lake County Park encompasses a 116-hectare lake completely surrounded by forest. In the Kinnickinnic River Fishery Area, fishing is possible at bridge crossings, from the shore, or while wading; 14 parking spaces provide public access there. The Kinnickinnic River South Fork Fish and Wildlife Area encompasses grasslands and floodplain habitats. Parking is available at State Highway 29 and 900th Street.

Riverbanks, Prairies, and Regional Discoveries

At Freedom Park, you can obtain brochures and maps for trips along the Great River Road. The Bluff Walk runs along the Mississippi and provides information about a migratory bird route characterized by large birds such as trumpeter swans and eagles. Bay City is located along the Great River Road Scenic Byway on the upper reaches of Lake Pepin and adds another scenic highlight.

Those looking for rare landscape formations will also find Morgan Coulee Prairie in Pierce, located on a steep, south-facing bluff slope. Plum Creek Woods features a deeply incised gorge with sandstone outcrops and a remnant of a southern mesic forest. Trenton Bluff Prairie consists of two dry prairies on steep sandstone cliffs along the Mississippi River. Several Great Plains plant species occur there at the eastern edge of their range, including Plains Muhly and Prairie Larkspur.

For your choice of accommodation, you can therefore weigh different travel ideas: a cave experience and unique recreational activities, river and lake landscapes, wildlife watching, or trails through prairie and forest. For further research, River Falls is also worth considering.
