Door County: Nature, Trails, and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Door County
Door County combines impressive waterfront landscapes, diverse trails, and a distinctive regional culture. Those planning a trip with nature experiences, history, and special culinary traditions will find many different points of interest here. When choosing a vacation rental or holiday home, it is worth first defining the focus of the trip: active days on trails, discoveries along the lakeshore, museum visits, or excursions with a regional character.
The landscape is particularly diverse in the state parks. Peninsula State Park has eight miles of shoreline in Door County. There, at Eagle Tower, an 850-foot-long, fully accessible treetop walkway leads all the way to the top of the tower. In Whitefish Dunes State Park, the natural resources authorities protect a sensitive dune landscape on the eastern Door County peninsula. The park includes 14.5 miles of hiking trails and 1.5 miles of sandy beach. This combination is suitable for travel plans that combine longer walks with time at the beach.
Trails for Active and Curious Days
The Ahnapee State Trail runs from the city limits of Sturgeon Bay to the boundary between Door County and Kewaunee County. The flat, paved trail is suitable for families for cycling, hiking, and horseback riding. Those who enjoy combining different landscape impressions on a walk can choose the one-mile-long Poetry Trail in Newport State Park. Ten permanently installed panels display poems.
At Cave Point County Park, a half-mile-long hiking trail runs along the landscape and connects to several miles of hiking trails in the adjacent Whitefish Dunes State Park. Kayak tours allow paddlers to explore sea caves up close and take in the picturesque lakeshore. At The Ridges Sanctuary, the nearly one-third-of-a-mile-long Hidden Brook Boardwalk passes through a boreal forest. For a trip with a particular focus on nature, there are therefore different formats to choose from: paved trails, beach and dune landscapes, forest paths, and experiences on the water.
Rock Island State Park also combines landscape and history. It is home to Wisconsin's oldest lighthouse, and the park also has 2,000 feet of beach. The Washington Island Ferry operates year-round across the Death's Door passage and carries vehicles, motorcycles, and bicycles. This makes it possible to include a stay on Washington Island as a separate part of the travel plans.
Culture, History, and Regional Cuisine
The Door County Maritime Museum features interactive exhibits on the region's maritime roots. At the Corner of the Past/Old Anderson House Museum, guided tours are offered through 14 restored historic buildings containing local historical artifacts. Heritage Village comprises nine historic buildings that depict rural life in Door County in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Those interested in religious history can also visit the roadside chapels. They represent an Old World religious tradition that was brought to this area in the 1870s. Public access to the Belgian chapels varies: some are open, others have restricted access or are private; some chapels that are open to the public are closed in winter.
Traditional fish boils are also part of the region's character. In this tradition, locally caught whitefish is cooked over an open fire in a communal outdoor kitchen, usually in a large metal kettle. This tradition has been one of Door County's attractions for more than 70 years and is part of the regional culture. From mid-July to mid-August, visitors can also pick ripe cherries directly from the trees.
For car trips, day trips, or experienced road cyclists, the 66-mile Door County Coastal Byway is another way to experience the region. In February 2021, the route received National Scenic Byway status from the U.S. Department of Transportation. In southern Door County, Potawatomi State Park on the shore of Sturgeon Bay offers 1,200 acres of gently rolling uplands bounded by steep slopes and rugged limestone cliffs. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the park hosts naturalist programs, guest lectures, and performances by musicians.
Choosing the Right Base
When searching for accommodation, you can use the planned experiences as a guide. For cycling, hiking, and horseback riding, the Ahnapee State Trail offers a clearly defined trail character. For nature and waterfront landscapes, consider the state parks, Cave Point County Park, or the Coastal Byway. Those who want to place greater emphasis on culture and regional history can include maritime exhibits, historic buildings, chapels, and fish boils in their travel plans. This makes it possible to choose a vacation rental in Door County that suits your personal interests without limiting the trip to just one type of experience.
