Rock: Discover Nature, Trails, and History
Accommodation in Rock
Rock combines river and floodplain landscapes with trails through nature and places where regional history comes to life. The Ice Age Trail, birdwatching, museums, and performances offer different ways to shape your trip. When choosing a vacation rental, consider whether you’d mainly like to spend time outdoors, experience culture, or combine both.
Wetland Landscapes and Trails
The Avon Bottoms State Natural Area consists of two units: the Avon Bottoms floodplain forest and the Swenson wet prairie. There are also specific opportunities for birdwatching. Species found there include blue-gray gnatcatchers, tufted titmice, blue-winged teal, green-winged teal, and wood ducks. These habitats and bird species give the landscape a distinctive character.
At Storrs Lake Wildlife Area, trails run for two miles through mixed forests, tall prairie grasses, wildflowers, and dry kettles. If you’d like to include longer distances in your trip plans, the Ice Age Trail runs for 64 miles through Rock County. The section between Janesville and Milton follows a disused railroad corridor that was converted for public use. The county also has more than 250 miles of designated trails, including riverwalks, bike trails, and nature trails. The trails offer opportunities for biking, horseback riding, and roller skating. This lets you choose between a named trail section and a broader network of trails with a range of activities.
Exploring the Rock River
The Rock River offers opportunities for fishing and motorized watercraft activities. One specific canoeing option starts at the launch site in Murwin Park: from there, the route heads downstream to the takeout at the City of Janesville’s Traxler Park. The floodplains at Murwin Park also offer opportunities for birdwatching. There are several ways to experience the river: from the water, with a fishing rod, or while observing nature from the riverbank.
You can also plan your day around the activities you have in mind on land. A 178-hectare public park in Rock County offers views of the Rock River and opportunities for hiking. The designated Rustic Roads are known for their scenic and landscape views while driving. The county also has around a dozen golf courses, with different layouts and playing options for a range of skill levels.
Discover History and Culture
The Milton House is recognized as a National Historic Landmark because of its documented role in the Underground Railroad and is certified as a site in the National Park Service’s Network to Freedom program. The museum offers general tours year-round; seasonal opening hours and reservation requirements vary. Tours also include the tunnel connecting the complex to a pioneer cabin. Check the current tour schedule before your trip. A tour of the Lincoln-Tallman House offers insight into the affluent lifestyle of the 19th century and the history of the Tallman family.
The Rock County Historical Society Visitor Center offers free exhibits on local life during World War II and the region’s automotive heritage. Check seasonal opening hours before visiting. Beckman Mill is also part of the region’s history: the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.
The arts scene in Rock County ranges from classical works to contemporary Broadway musicals. It includes museums and galleries, as well as performances by local and touring musicians, dancers, and theater companies. Botanical and poetry gardens add to the range, alongside Indigenous art and industrial art. Seasonal opportunities to sample regional foods include berry and pumpkin patches, orchards, and local farmers’ markets. Artisan-made products include fermented beverages, chocolate, and cheese.
Choose Your Travel Focus When Selecting a Place to Stay
When looking for a vacation rental in Rock, your preferred pace for the day can be a helpful guide: nature trails and birdwatching offer a different focus from a canoe trip or visits to tours, exhibitions, and performances. If you’d like to combine several themes, take specific destinations into account when planning and, for time-sensitive offerings, check current visiting hours.
