Green County combines Swiss cultural heritage, colorful festivals, award-winning cheese and local brewery products. More than a dozen cheese factories characterize the region; it is also home to more Wisconsin Master Cheesemakers than anywhere else in the state. Anyone planning a trip combining culinary enjoyment, history and landscapes will therefore find a range of options for planning their days.

Cheese History and Swiss Traditions

The National Historic Cheesemaking Center tells the history of cheesemaking in Wisconsin through recreations of former cheese factories. One exhibition is dedicated to Limburger, which has been produced in Green County since the mid-19th century. Monroe is also home to the only Limburger cheese factory in the United States. The Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory showcases cheesemaking in the early 20th century and demonstrates the production of Brick, Swiss and Limburger cheese using original equipment that has remained unchanged since 1917.

Green County Cheese Days offers a special combination of regional cuisine and local customs. The three-day festival on the Historic Courthouse Square in Monroe celebrates cheesemaking, dairy farming and Swiss traditions. Traditional cheesemaking in a copper kettle is demonstrated, and visitors can participate by stirring the cheese. The Cheese Days Parade is led by a herd of Brown Swiss cows. New Glarus is also a destination in Green County for Swiss cuisine and traditions, as well as colorful festivals featuring yodeling and alphorns.

The Swiss Center of North America preserves Swiss-related collections, including dolls in authentic traditional clothing from Swiss villages and cantons. If you would like to use the archival holdings there, advance notice by telephone or in writing of at least one week is required. Not all materials are available at all times; use may be supervised by staff.

Cycling Routes and Nature Experiences

The Sugar River State Trail follows a former railroad corridor for 24 miles from New Glarus to Brodhead. Along the way, the trail crosses 14 covered bridges and passes farmland, forests, rolling hills, picturesque meadows, remnants of prairies and landscapes shaped by the Ice Age. As a National Recreational Trail, it is also of interest when planning a trip centered on a longer route. Green County also has two additional bike trails and numerous paved side roads suitable for cycling.

New Glarus Woods State Park covers 435 acres and offers camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing. The park provides direct access to the Sugar River State Trail. Eight miles of hiking trails pass through mature forests and restored prairies, offering opportunities for wildlife observation. South of the Sugar River State Trail rest area near Monticello, the Badger State Trail connects with it. Parking is available at the rest area near County Highways C and EE.

Cadiz Springs State Recreation Area is a day-trip destination in the Driftless Area with rolling hills, valleys and spring-fed streams. Eight miles of hiking trails pass through forests, along streams and around lakes; here too, there are opportunities for wildlife observation. For canoeing, Green County highlights prairies, parks and a winding river as landscapes.

Museums for a Varied Day Trip

The Kelch Aviation Museum presents the history of the Golden Age of Aviation through a collection of 19 original historic aircraft. It is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This makes it possible to add a cultural visit to your trip planning if, in addition to cycling routes, nature and regional cuisine, you are also interested in the history of technology.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first determine the focus of your trip: cheese history and Swiss traditions, a longer cycling route, hiking trails through forests and prairies, or a varied mix of a museum, landscapes and regional cuisine. For further location selection, New Glarus, Brodhead and Browntown are also available to you.
