Jackson County: Discover Nature, Water and History
Accommodation in Jackson County
Jackson County combines impressive forest landscapes, rivers, lakes and unusual historic sites. Anyone looking for a vacation rental or holiday home for a varied trip will find different options here: active days in Black River State Forest, nature observation in special habitats, water sports on the river or lake, and cultural discoveries in museums and historic buildings.
Forests, Sandstone and Special Natural Areas
Black River State Forest is a 68,000-acre forest area with pine and oak forests beneath tall sandstone cliffs. Castle Mound is a distinctive landscape feature: the sandstone butte rises 180 feet above the surrounding sandy plain and consists of approximately 400-million-year-old Cambrian sandstone. A hiking trail crosses the Castle Mound Pine Forest; an observation tower is located near the middle of the hill.
The protected areas also showcase very different landscapes. North Bend Bottoms Wildlife Area includes floodplain forest, lowland hardwood stands, swampy oxbows, as well as meadows and fields at higher elevations along the Black River. Millston Sand Barrens is known for its oak savanna and barrens habitat and provides a home for rare butterflies. In Black River Savanna, sand prairie and open oak stands with diverse flora grow on a sandy, semi-open river terrace.
Dike 17 Wildlife Area is also notable for nature enthusiasts. The original release site of the central elk herd was located there; the remaining enclosure can still be seen. Gullickson's Glen is designated as a Wisconsin State Natural Area, but access is restricted. This special circumstance should be taken into account when choosing your destinations and planning your days.
Active Days on Trails, Routes and the Water
Black River State Forest has 20 miles of cross-country ski trails groomed for skating and classic cross-country skiing. There are also 34 miles of ATV routes there, connected to the routes in Jackson County and Clark County. The larger ATV trail system of Jackson County Forest and Black River State Forest has eight access points, including four trailheads directly at I-94. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore pay particular attention to whether your trip is primarily devoted to cross-country skiing, motorized off-road sports or a mix of different activities.
The Black River and the East Fork of the Black River offer opportunities for canoeing and kayaking. In North Bend Bottoms Wildlife Area, there are access points along Highway VV for boating, canoeing and kayaking. Wazee Lake attracts scuba divers because of its clarity. Fishing, water skiing, swimming and recreational boating are possible at Lake Arbutus; East Arbutus County Park is located on the lake's shore.
History and Culture as a Second Travel Focus
Carnegie Library Museum is housed in a library building constructed in 1915 that is listed in the Wisconsin Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Two exhibition levels present the early history of Jackson County. Spring Creek Schoolhouse Museum was built in 1885 and operated as a school until 1963; it welcomes groups, organizations and schools for tours and educational visits.
Silver Mound Archaeological District is of archaeological and prehistoric significance. Its period of significance extends from 7000 to 8999 BC; the district also has National Historic Landmark status. Further insights into the region's past are provided by Fairchild Area History Center, Millston Area Museum, Rustic Mill Park and Taylor Museum of History. Among other subjects, they focus on the heritage of the communities, the way of life of early pioneers, the milling industry and Taylor's past.
Historic Keefe House is a residence completed in 1910 in the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles. Charles Van Schaick Photo Gallery Building is associated with a photographic collection documenting Jackson County and the Ho-Chunk Nation from the 1880s through the 1940s. Historical Sawmill Memorial Monument commemorates the founding of Black River Falls and the city's early timber industry. At Andrew Blackhawk Powwow Grounds, the Ho-Chunk Nation held a three-day Contest Pow-Wow over Labor Day weekend in 2025, featuring culture, dance, music and community.
