Polk combines wooded river landscapes, lakes, historic sites, and diverse trails to create a destination for active and curious days away. The Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway offers more than 200 miles of clean water flowing through a wooded landscape, with sections that are calm and others that run swiftly. Paddling, boating, fishing, and camping are among the experiences available there. The St. Croix Wild and Scenic Riverway also forms the western boundary of Polk County.

Rivers, Lakes, and Distinctive Landscapes

A notable starting point for nature experiences is Interstate Park. It is the oldest state park in Wisconsin and was established in 1900. The 0.4-mile Pothole Trail forms a loop at the western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. From there, you can enjoy views of the Dalles of the St. Croix River gorge and potholes formed by glacial water.

The Lake O' the Dalles Trail is also designed as a loop. The one-mile trail circles the 23-acre Lake O' the Dalles and is intended for wildlife observation. This gives you different options in Polk: a short trail with geological features, a loop around the lake, and wide-ranging activities on the river.

Trails for Cycling, Hiking, and Winter Days

The Stower Seven Lakes State Trail follows a former railroad corridor and is 14 miles long. The route passes through maple and oak forests, wetlands, prairies, and agricultural land, as well as by seven scenic lakes. Its limestone surface and level grade are suitable for cyclists, walkers, and joggers. In winter, the trail is open for ungroomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The Gandy Dancer State Trail also offers a longer perspective on the region. The southern section runs for 47 miles through Wisconsin and through the communities of Centuria, Milltown, Luck, Frederic, Siren, and Webster. A state trail pass is required for cycling on the Gandy Dancer State Trail. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between short loops, longer level routes, and river activities.

Nature Experiences with Different Focal Points

Straight Lake State Park has an accessible fishing area along the shore of Rainbow Lake. In central Polk County, D.D. Kennedy Park is a 106-acre protected area along Balsam Branch. It offers 11 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. These options complement the ungroomed winter opportunities on the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail with a specifically groomed ski track.

Those interested in a vacation rental or holiday home in Polk can tailor their search to their preferred way of spending their trip: water activities, fishing, and paddling create a different daily rhythm than longer cycling routes, short nature trails, or winter activities. Because the landscape combines different types of experiences, it is worth deciding before booking which goals will be the focus of your stay.

History, Exhibits, and Regional Markets

The Ice Age Interpretive Center in Interstate Park includes an exhibit area, a classroom, an auditorium, and a gift shop. The exhibits cover Ice Age geology, the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), wildlife, and Lake O' the Dalles. Interpretive programs are offered there year-round, including guided hikes, wildlife programs, and family-friendly activities.

The Polk County Museum is housed in the former 1899 Polk County Courthouse and presents the history of Polk County across three floors. Programs, exhibits, and research resources share this history with the public. Polk County farmers' markets offer seasonal produce, handmade goods, and local specialties. This allows days spent in nature to be complemented by cultural and regional impressions.

Places for Further Trip Planning

To choose additional local destinations, you can also view Luck and St. Croix Falls separately. Polk is therefore suitable for planning a trip that combines nature, activity, history, and regional markets according to your own interests.
