Juneau County offers unusual contrasts for a varied trip: cycling routes pass through wetlands, along sandstone bluffs, and through rolling farmland and pastureland, while state parks provide hiking trails, scenic overlooks, beaches, and water access. The area also features significant natural areas and insights into the region’s history. When choosing a vacation rental, you can therefore plan your stay around whether you primarily want to enjoy cycling and paddling tours, observe nature, go hiking, or explore cultural attractions.

Cycling Trails with a Variety of Experiences

The 400 State Trail is suitable for combined cycling and paddling tours. Along the route, you can see wetlands, wildlife, sandstone bluffs, rolling farmland, and pastureland. Depending on the season, shuttle service and rentals are available in Wonewoc. In Juneau County, the Omaha Trail runs 13 miles from Camp Douglas south to Elroy. One distinctive feature of the trail is a tunnel that is less than two city blocks long. In Elroy, the Omaha Trail connects with the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the 400 State Trail. When looking for accommodation, you can focus on individual landscape highlights or on combining several routes.

Hiking Trails, Bluffs, and Scenic Overlooks

At Buckhorn State Park, four miles of hiking trails pass through wetlands, oak forests, pine thickets, shoreline areas, and a small prairie. The Oak Barrens Nature Trail is 1.5 miles long and includes interpretive signs and an observation tower. The park is located on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and has an accessible boat launch with an accessible boarding pier.

Mill Bluff State Park offers a different experience. It has more than two miles of hiking trails with views of mesas, buttes, and rock pinnacles. A 0.4-mile self-guided nature trail provides information about wildlife, trees, wildflowers, and geology. The summit overlook atop the rock is reached by 223 stone steps. If you also want to spend time by the water in addition to hiking, the park has a public swimming pond with a water surface of 2.5 acres and a 250-foot-long white-sand beach.

Wetlands and Special Natural Areas

The Yellow River Oxbows showcase a landscape shaped by the meandering Yellow River, with floodplain forest, oxbow lakes, isolated and flowing marsh waters, and ponds. The area is best explored by boat; there is also pedestrian access to a trail leading into the natural area. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge encompasses a 44,000-acre protected area. It is home to the world’s largest population of endangered Karner blue butterflies. Boardwalks cross the wetlands, and a two-story observation tower provides another way to view the landscape.

Meadow Valley Barrens is also a distinctive natural setting. The 631-acre State Natural Area within the Meadow Valley Wildlife Area was designated a State Natural Area in 2008. Sand barrens with Hill’s pine and oak trees, scattered jack pines, blueberries, huckleberries, and three rare insect species characterize this area. The Dells of the Wisconsin River State Natural Area also includes land in Juneau County. There, the 1.5-mile Chapel Gorge Trail leads to a shoreline beach between rock outcrops along the river; canoes and kayaks can be launched into the Wisconsin River via a carry-in access point at Cambrian Overlook.

Culture and Regional Orientation

The Boorman House provides a cultural highlight. The 1876 Victorian mansion is home to the Juneau County Historical Society and displays local artifacts, records, and research materials. It is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. In Mauston, the Greater Mauston Farmers Market takes place on the lawn of the Juneau County Courthouse in the city center. Vendors offer fresh, locally grown fruit and vegetables, baked goods, eggs, handicrafts, plants, and preserves. This allows you to vary your trip between nature experiences, active days on the water, regional history, and a visit to the city center.
