Langlade combines striking glacial landscapes, extensive trails, lakes, and rivers with insights into the region’s history. Those planning a trip with active days, nature observation, and cultural discoveries will find a wide range of possibilities here. When choosing your vacation rental, it is therefore worth first deciding what you want to focus on: long hiking routes, waterscapes, mountain biking trails, winter sports, or historic sites.

Glacial Landscapes and Diverse Trails

In Langlade County, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail follows the terminal moraines of the Langlade and Green Bay glacial lobes. Along the way, the trail rises up to 250 feet above the gravel plain of the Antigo Flats. With more than 66 miles, the trail offers numerous opportunities to include longer sections in your travel plans. The seven named segments differ considerably in length:

  • Ice Override: 0.8 miles
  • Antigo Heights: 7.2 miles
  • Kettlebowl: 9.9 miles
  • Lumbercamp: 12 miles
  • Summit Moraine: 12.2 miles
  • Highland Lakes: 12.8 miles
  • Parrish Hills: 12 miles

The Wolf River State Trail also offers a clearly defined route: it runs 33.4 miles from White Lake to Lake Metonga along a former Wisconsin Central railroad line. Along the Wolf River itself, boulders, a natural course, and a steep gradient in many places shape the landscape. In the Gartzke Flowage Recreation Area, the trails pass through Weymouth pines, upland hardwood forest, and cedar swamps along the reservoir.

Lakes, Wilderness, and Active Outings

Jack Lake does not allow motorboat traffic and has a sandy beach. The Jack Lake Trail in Veteran’s Memorial Park leads around a lightly developed lake; the park also includes an arboretum with more than 500 plant species. For families with different interests, the Jack Lake Mountain Bike Trail offers 12 miles of fast, flowing singletrack and doubletrack trails. The Jack Rabbit Trail is intended for children and beginners.

Further nature experiences can be found in the designated recreation areas. The Camp Susan Recreation Area on Susan Lake provides the public with access for hiking and to the Ice Age Trail. Motorized access is possible as far as the new gate. At the trailhead in the Crocker Hills Recreation Area, there is parking, a pit toilet, an open shelter, hitching posts, picnic tables, and a hand pump for fresh water. The Charles De Langlade Recreation Area also offers hiking opportunities.

Those interested in waterways and birds can explore the Ackley Wildlife Area with its 27 shallow water impoundments for waterfowl. Together, they cover more than 400 acres of water. A 40-mile stretch with well-known trout waters between Highway T and Highway M is divided into ten public access points.

History, Museums, and Regional Impressions

The museum campus of the Langlade County Historical Society brings together several different historical artifacts. These include a former Carnegie library that served as the city’s public library from 1905 to 1997, a steam locomotive and a railcar from the early 20th century, and the original log cabin of city founder Francis Deleglise, built in 1878. The museum charges no admission and offers primarily self-guided exhibits. Deleglise Cabin and the 440 Locomotive & Caboose can be visited under the supervision of a volunteer staff member.

You can discover local products at the Antigo Farmers’ Market. It takes place on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. from June through September. Locally produced foods are offered; all products sold are made by the respective vendors within a 50-mile radius. The Langlade County Fair adds local vendors, livestock shows, live entertainment, food, and carnival attractions to the regional program.

Which Vacation Rental Is Right for Your Trip?

Langlade County is promoted as Wisconsin’s “County of Trails” and offers cultural, historical, nature-focused, and recreational opportunities year-round. Choose your vacation rental based on the experience you want to define your trip: the many trail sections are well suited to a tour with longer hikes, Jack Lake and the recreation areas to days by the water and in nature, while the museum, market, and regional events provide cultural variety. If winter sports are a further focus, Kettlebowl Ski Hill has five tow lifts and eight runs for beginners through advanced skiers, including a practice slope and an area with terrain park features.

For further travel planning, you can also visit the pages on Antigo and Summit Lake. This makes it possible to determine which places and experiences best suit your preferred travel pace.
