Jefferson County combines the landscape of Waurika Lake with prominent traces of regional history. Those looking for a mix of water activities, fishing, and cultural discoveries on vacation will find various starting points for planning their trip here. A vacation rental or other accommodation can be selected according to the desired focus: days at the lake, historic sites in Waurika, or a combination of both.

Waurika Lake: Water, Fishing, and Recreation Areas

Waurika Lake is partly located in Jefferson County. The lake has six recreation areas with boat ramps, campgrounds, picnic tables, and shelters. This provides various options for spending time outdoors without requiring all travelers to follow the same daily schedule. Families can combine an outing by the water with a picnic break, while those who primarily visit the lake for fishing will find a particularly wide range of fish species.

At Waurika Lake, you can fish for channel catfish, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass, sunfish, crappie, and walleye. Kiowa Park Campground also offers a boat ramp, a fishing pier, and a swimming beach for access to Waurika Lake. This information helps with choosing a personal focus: a day with a boat and fishing rod calls for a different itinerary than a relaxing time at the swimming beach. The southwestern section of the Oklahoma Fishing Trail extends to Waurika Lake and further underscores the lake’s importance for regional recreation.

Waurika and the History of the Chisholm Trail

Jefferson County also has several distinct cultural-history themes. The First Presbyterian Church in Waurika is the only surviving church from before 1910 that remains at its original location and in its historic form. The Jefferson County Courthouse is a four-story brick building in a simplified Art Deco style. Those interested in architecture and local history can incorporate these two buildings into their own exploration of Waurika.

The Chisholm Trail Historical Museum in Waurika presents the regional and local history of the Chisholm Trail. The trail led from Red River Station on the Texas side into what is now Jefferson County. In the county, U.S. Highway 81 runs parallel to the former Chisholm Trail. Monument Hill features a concrete obelisk erected in April 1941 in memory of the cowboys who worked along the Chisholm Trail. Cowboys also used Monument Hill as a landmark on the Chisholm Trail. This makes it possible to explore the history not only through a museum but also through specific structures and connections to the landscape.

Another prominent structure is the State Highway 79 Bridge over the Red River. It was built in 1939 and consists of 21 truss spans, each 100 feet long, in the form of a Camelback pony truss bridge. The bridge belongs to a rare bridge type and is highly intact. Waurika is also home to the Rock Island Passenger Station. It is the only surviving railroad-related property in Waurika and an excellent example of a masonry Rock Island railway station in the Jacobethian Revival style in Oklahoma.

Choose Your Travel Dates and Accommodation Based on Your Interests

Those who want to include this event in their plans can schedule their trip for that weekend. When choosing a vacation rental in Jefferson County, it is advisable to first determine your personal focus: Should Waurika Lake, with fishing and water activities, be the main attraction, or is the emphasis more on museums, historic buildings, and the history of the Chisholm Trail?
