Garvin County: Lakes, Museums and History
Accommodation in Garvin County
Garvin County combines historical discoveries, water activities, sports and local traditions. Pauls Valley in particular offers many different travel ideas: You can visit museums, spend time at the lake, plan a visit to an amusement park or get to know regional specialties. This makes the area suitable for travel plans that alternate between active and more relaxing days.
Culture and History in Pauls Valley and Wynnewood
The Santa Fe Depot Museum in Pauls Valley displays old photographs, school memorabilia and mementos from the pioneer era. Near the depot, there is also a steam locomotive with a coal tender and a historic red caboose. Pauls Valley is also a stop for the Heartland Flyer, which connects Oklahoma City with Fort Worth daily. The museum is located next to the station, so railroad history and travel history seem closely connected here.
The Toy & Action Figure Museum offers another cultural facet. It opened on October 15, 2005, and is dedicated to the art and modeling of action figures. The history of residential life and schools can be explored at the Murray-Lindsay Mansion. The 1880 house has 15 rooms, two bathrooms and four fireplaces. The furnishings are associated with the Irish-born Frank Murray and his wife, Alzira McCaughey, a Choctaw. The complex also includes a two-room schoolhouse from 1908, located across from the mansion.
In Wynnewood, the Eskridge Hotel Museum tells the story of a building constructed in 1907 that remained in operation as a hotel and boarding house until 1970. The museum extends across three floors. Exhibits include a funeral parlor, a barbershop, a post office, a doctor's office and a veterans' memorial exhibit. Tours are conducted by appointment.
Lakes, Sports and Days Outdoors
Pauls Valley City Lake is a 750-acre lake created in 1954 for camping, fishing, boating and swimming. Today, it offers sites with RV hookups, basic tent sites, boat ramps, fishing piers, picnic areas and a pavilion. Permits from the city are required for fishing, camping, boating and hunting at Pauls Valley City Lake. Lake R.C. Longmire also offers opportunities for fishing, camping, swimming and boating, as well as picnic areas, grills and a pavilion. It also serves as a wintering area for bald eagles. Important for planning: The lake is intended exclusively for fishing; water skiing and jet skiing are not permitted there.
Several options are available for active days. Pauls Valley Municipal Golf Course is a 9-hole course with a driving range, putting green and chipping bunker. It is located directly off I-35 at Exit 70 East and offers golf cart rentals. The Flightline Disc Golf Course was designed by Houck on a former municipal golf course and has granite markers at the tee areas. The back nine is more difficult than the front nine because of the prevailing winds and dense vegetation along holes 13 and 14.
Pauls Valley Water Park is open in summer from the end of May through September 1. At Wacker Park, you will find playgrounds, paths for walking and jogging, a stage for live performances, sports facilities, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a basketball court, a sand volleyball court and rodeo facilities. A rose garden there is ideal for a leisurely stroll.
Traditions, Animals and Regional Specialties
The Garvin County Free Fair is an annual event in Pauls Valley. The listed activities include pedal tractor competitions, a contest for pets in the best costumes, square dancing, wiener dog races and musical entertainment. The Pauls Valley Heritage Days Rodeo includes seven Western competition categories: Saddle Bronc Riding, Bareback Riding, Calf Roping, Team Roping, Steer Wrestling, Barrel Racing and Bull Riding.
At the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Center, visitors may walk near the enclosures and fences, but may not enter the pastures. On the second Tuesday of every month, a mixed group of 70 to 80 animals is offered for adoption there. For culinary memories, visit Field's in Pauls Valley. The history of Field's Pecan Pie Factory goes back to Mrs. Hazelle Field, who baked pecan pies in her kitchen in 1922 for her husband's restaurant. Her recipe is still used; Field's offers pecan, chocolate and lemon chess pies.
Which Base Suits Your Travel Plan?
When searching for a vacation rental in Garvin County, you should first determine which experiences are the focus of your trip. If you want to combine museums, water activities, parks and regional specialties, the offerings in Pauls Valley can be the main focus. For historic architecture and exhibitions, Wynnewood is one of the relevant names to consider when planning your trip. A stay with plenty of nature also requires a look at the different lake rules: While several activities and permits play a role at Pauls Valley City Lake, Lake R.C. Longmire is intended exclusively for fishing.
For further orientation, you can also include Lindsay, Pauls Valley and Wynnewood in your selection. This allows you to tailor your accommodation search to the desired mix of history, recreation, water activities and local traditions.
