Ryan: Settlement History and Architectural Heritage
Accommodation in Ryan
Ryan’s history connects settlement, railroads, and agriculture with a rural brick building in the Gothic Revival style. For travelers who want to include historic community development and architectural heritage in their vacation plans, Ryan offers a clear thematic focus.
Location and Early Settlement History
Ryan is located about two miles north of the Red River, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 81 and State Highway 32. The town’s name comes from rancher Stephen W. Ryan, who settled near present-day Ryan in 1875. Through his marriage to a Chickasaw woman, he acquired extensive land in what is now Jefferson County. His house, built around 1877, was the community’s first residence.
The early years can be traced through other specific milestones. By June 1890, a post office had been established near Ryan. In 1892, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway built a station on Stephen W. Ryan’s land; shortly afterward, the townsite was officially platted. A fire nearly destroyed Ryan in December 1895, but residents subsequently rebuilt the community.
Growth and Economic Change
In 1906, delegates to the constitutional convention chose Ryan as the county seat of Jefferson County. By 1908, the town had 30 businesses, including two banks, a hotel, a cotton gin, two lumberyards, a flour mill, and a cottonseed oil mill. This variety shows how the community of that time developed through diverse businesses as well as its agricultural roots.
Agriculture and livestock ranching shaped Ryan. Over the course of the community’s history, farmers grew cotton, corn, and wheat. Fruit growing was also a successful industry: pears, peaches, apples, plums, and strawberries were produced in large quantities. Fruit growing complemented Ryan’s historic economic structure, shaped by field crops, mills, and the cotton gin.
The infrastructure of the time is also part of the town’s history: by 1930, Ryan had one mile of paved roads and a bus line. This date makes clear that these details describe development up to that year.
Architecture and Notable Figures
Irving Baptist Church was built in 1917 at a site six miles northwest of Ryan. It is a rural brick building in a restrained Gothic Revival style. Its significance lies in its architectural qualities and in the fact that, as a surviving building in the community of Irving, Oklahoma, it retains its architectural integrity. The church has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2009 and is listed there under Ryan, Oklahoma.
Another biographical connection is Carlos Ray, known as Chuck Norris. The actor and martial artist was born in Ryan on March 10, 1940. This connection adds a personal story linked to the town to its settlement and economic history.
