Garfield County: History, Museums and Green Experiences
Accommodation in Garfield County
Garfield County combines the history of the 1893 land opening with museums, theater, hiking and recreational opportunities. Those planning a trip with cultural discoveries and active breaks will find a variety of ideas here for days spent together. A vacation apartment or vacation home can be selected to suit the desired travel theme, with a focus on historical exhibits, family experiences, sports or nature.
History at the Courthouse and Historic Museums
Garfield County was opened to non-Native settlers on September 16, 1893. The Cherokee Strip Regional Heritage Center offers an engaging way to learn about this era. The historic museum explores the settlement and development of northwestern Oklahoma, beginning with the 1893 Land Run. The permanent exhibition covers the origins of the Cherokee Outlet, the land opening, settlement, and the culture and society that developed in the region.
The Garfield County Courthouse also represents the area's history. Built in 1934, the building is designed in the Art Deco style and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Its walls feature historic murals by artist Ruth Augur, created as part of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. At Humphrey Heritage Village, five historically significant buildings provide further insight into life in earlier times. They include the only surviving land office from the 1893 Land Run, which originally stood on the east side of Enid's town square. A restored one-room schoolhouse, where students were taught in the Imo area from 1896 to 1947, is now used as a living history classroom.
Experiences for Different Travel Preferences
For families, Leonardo's Children's Museum offers more than 100 interactive, hands-on activities. The science-focused outdoor playground Adventure Quest complements this offering with a three-story wooden structure, bridges, slides, swings, mazes and a dinosaur dig site. Those who prefer live performances can put the Gaslight Theatre on their itinerary. It was founded as Enid Community Theatre in 1966 and is one of Oklahoma's oldest and most active community theaters. Its program covers a broad range of theatrical entertainment; at the same time, it provides a setting where nonprofessional actors, directors, designers and technicians can learn and practice their art.
The Railroad Museum of Oklahoma focuses on railroad history. It is housed in a historic freight depot from the 1920s and displays nine authentic cabooses from various railroad companies that served Enid. The collection also includes more than 1,000 pieces of dining-car china and silverware from former passenger trains. Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park features an 80-percent-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and is Oklahoma's official Vietnam War memorial. The M.L. Becker Learning Center houses permanent and changing exhibits of patriotic, military and war-related memorabilia.
