Delaware County combines the western slopes of the Ozark Plateau with forests, prairies and land used for agriculture. It is also home to Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees, Lake Eucha and a remarkable mix of nature, water-based activities and regional history. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth first asking what kind of holiday you would like to plan: active days on the water, wildlife and nature observation, walks or cultural discoveries.

Lakes, Parks and Orientation in the County

Lake Eucha is an area for fishing and recreation in Delaware County. Directly south of it lies the 14,316-acre Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area. At Grand Lake, the Sailboat Bridge offers a striking impression of the water landscape: it is the second-longest bridge over water in Oklahoma.

Several facilities focus on the water. The Honey Creek Area at Grand Lake State Park is a 38-acre park open year-round on the shore of Grand Lake in Grove. It has a fishing pier, a fish-cleaning station, a lighted boat ramp and a dock. The Honey Creek Area also provides access for boating via a lighted boat ramp and a dock. Wolf Creek Park and Boating Facility is a fishing facility on Grand Lake in Grove; camping is not permitted on its grounds. For geographical orientation, it is also important to know that U.S. Highway 59 crosses Delaware County from north to south.

Nature Experiences for Different Day Plans

The Bernice Area at Grand Lake State Park is located at the northwest corner of Grand Lake and covers 88 acres. The park includes a nature center, a wildlife-feeding area and two wildlife observation towers. There is also a paved, low-barrier path for walking and jogging that is one mile long. This clearly defined loop can be just as appealing for a more active morning as for a shorter exercise break.

In Grove, Lendonwood Gardens adds a botanical focus to the water and park landscape. The eight-acre garden features more than 1,200 different plant species and eight distinct garden areas, including a Japanese pavilion and an azalea garden. Tours and group tours are available by prior arrangement. Those traveling with children or bringing a dog will find further practical options at the Har-Ber Village Museum: The museum offers a self-guided tour through six acres with almost 100 exhibits on the shore of Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees. The grounds also include an almost two-mile-long pet-friendly nature trail. A three-quarter-mile section is accessible to strollers, wheelchairs and other non-motorized vehicles.

History, Museums and Living Traditions

Har-Ber Village Museum supplements its exhibits with demonstrations of historic crafts and trades, including blacksmithing, spinning, weaving and cooking on a stove. The Corey House, built in 1899, and the adjacent hotel, added in 1909, provide a remarkably authentic picture of small-town life in Grove during the early years of Oklahoma statehood. The Mariee Wallace Museum opened in 1991 to house historic artifacts, books and other items from Delaware County.

The regional history of Indigenous communities is also present at certain sites. Special ceremonies of the Seneca and Cayuga have been held at the Bassett Grove Ceremonial Grounds since 1832. The Cayuga Mission Church, also known as Splitlog Church, is a registered historic site northwest of Grove in the Seneca-Cayuga area; it was built by Mathias Spitlog. The Delaware County Historical Society maintains a research library and archive at the museum in Jay, which are open to all visitors during regular museum opening hours.

Boating or Nature Observation?

For a day specifically focused on the water, Grand Lake Cruises offers individually arranged boat trips on Grand Lake, including trips for nature observation, visits to eagle nests or exploration of the entire lake. Two-hour, four-hour and eight-hour boat trips are available. A seasonal highlight is the annual Pelican Festival, which celebrates the autumn migration of American white pelicans to the waters of Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees.

When searching for accommodation, you can use these differences as a guide: A holiday apartment or holiday home suits an itinerary focused on water and boating, as well as a quieter combination of garden, nature trail and museum. For further searches for places in the county, you can consider Grove, Afton and West Siloam Springs.
