Walsh is a destination for anyone who wants to discover history not only in exhibitions, but also in preserved buildings, churches and landscapes. The Homme Dam also offers opportunities for boating, while distinctive natural features such as the Dahlen Esker add to the experience. Families and other travel groups can therefore enjoy a varied stay: one day can be spent visiting historic sites, and another by the water or exploring the landscape. When looking for a vacation rental in Walsh, it is worth first organizing the experiences you want and the best time of year for them.

The Past Comes to Life

Walsh County Heritage Village is a collection of historic buildings and artifacts that illustrates life in the past. The complex includes a furnished farmhouse, outbuildings, a country church, a log cabin, a depot with a caboose, a taxidermy workshop and a working carousel. These different settings make the visit especially varied: In addition to residential and working environments, the focus is also on crafts, everyday objects and a moving attraction. Special group tours are organized by appointment.

The Walsh County Historical Museum is located in the former Minto School. The school building was constructed in 1895 using bricks made in Minto. The museum reconstructs former shops and businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a saloon, an ice cream parlor, a photography studio, a beauty salon and a dental office. Seasonal opening hours are important when planning a visit: The museum is open on Sundays and holidays from 12:00 to 17:00, from the Sunday before Memorial Day through the last Sunday in September. Take this period into account when planning a culture-focused trip.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The churches also reveal different aspects of the region’s architectural and religious history. St. Joseph’s Chapel is one of the smallest chapels in the United States and was built in 1907. It is open during daylight hours; the congregation and visitors also gather at the roadside chapel for worship each year. St. Stanislaus Church was built in 1901 in the Gothic Revival style. Its features include 19 stained-glass windows, numerous statues of saints, a covered pulpit and carved confessionals. In addition to the church building, the St. Stanislaus Church Historic District includes the rectory and cemetery, as well as St. Anthony Academy, built in 1920.

Another historic stop is North Trinity Church, which was built near Nash in 1893 and designed in the Gothic Revival style. Travelers interested in ecclesiastical art, architecture and local history will find a program with clearly distinct points of focus. Historic Elmwood House sits on 20 acres in an oxbow of the Park River in Grafton. Visits are available by appointment only.

Water, Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

Homme Dam is a 185-acre reservoir on the South Branch of the Park River. There is a fishing pier at the lake, and the recreation area offers opportunities for boating. Homme Dam thus complements the historic attractions with time spent by the water.

The Ridge Trail Historic District is a 47.7-acre historic trail system in Pembina and Walsh Counties. It follows a natural escarpment formed by glacial Lake Agassiz. The Dahlen Esker is approximately four miles long, 400 feet wide and 50 to 80 feet high. In the broader regional area, the Red River North Trail System encompasses Pembina and Walsh Counties; its eastern section follows the Red River and the forests from Park River to Hoople. These landscape features add a geological and geographical perspective to a trip to Walsh.
