Rodeo traditions, cultural history, and trails around Patterson Lake offer different ways to experience Stark County. If you enjoy attending events, you can plan around the summer rodeo; museums, collections, and nature-focused attractions offer other perspectives. This mix can also help you choose a vacation rental: first consider which places and experiences you want to shape your stay.

Rodeo Traditions and Motorsports

Roughrider Days PRCA Pro Rodeo is a summer tradition in western North Dakota. It takes place at the Stark County Fairgrounds & Events Park in Dickinson. Dates vary from year to year. The program includes bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback riding, barrel racing, team roping, and steer wrestling; individual events may also change from year to year. If you’re planning around the rodeo, check the dates for your travel year. While you’re there, discover Dickinson.

The Ranch Rodeo features wild cow milking competitions and the Hang-Man competition; the schedule and format may vary. Motorsports offer another focus: the Motorsports Park includes speedway and motocross tracks, while event dates are not fixed. These different forms of competition take place alongside one another, without promising the same program or dates.

Cultural History in Buildings, Collections, and Archives

Prairie Outpost Park includes five historic buildings and six re-created buildings. Relocated historic buildings and purpose-built ethnic buildings honor the cultures of the Czechs, Scandinavians, and Germans from Russia. Guided tours are offered only in summer; times and availability vary. When planning your trip, keep the seasonal nature of the tours in mind rather than assuming there will be a set visit time.

The Dickinson Museum Center is a 12-acre cultural and natural history complex. A variety of collections offer further insights into history and cultural traditions: the Joachim Regional Museum preserves ethnic heritage and presents art and history exhibits. The Pioneer Machinery Hall displays artifacts from Stark County’s early ranching and farming history. The Stark County Veterans Memorial is dedicated to all the men and women from Stark County who served honorably in the United States military.

The Ukrainian Cultural Institute features folk art, religious displays, and a research library. Exhibits include individually decorated pysanky Easter eggs and embroidered cloths. Varenyky or pyrohy, also called “Cheese Buttons,” are sold on site; availability may vary. The Theodore Roosevelt Center offers another way to explore history: the Stankard Research Library and the Roosevelt Reading Room are open to the public. Visitors can read letters, diaries, and newspapers by and about Theodore Roosevelt there; the center also has a comprehensive digital presidential library.

Trails and Activities at Patterson Lake

Boating is possible at the Patterson Lake Recreational Area. On the recreation area side, the Crooked Crane Trail offers a 1.9-mile concrete path with fitness and play equipment. The original section of the trail is about 9.6 miles long; six trailheads with parking, signs, and trail access help you find your way. The different lengths give you a practical reference point when deciding how far you plan to hike.

The original section of the Crooked Crane Trail also runs along the south and west ends of Patterson Lake, offering views and opportunities for wildlife watching. The Patterson Loop Trail takes a different route: it starts at Dickinson Dam and follows the north shore of Edward Arthur Patterson Lake. You can reach the Patterson Lake Recreational Area via Exit 59 on Interstate 94 South.

Nature in the Wider Region

The Schnell Ranch Recreation Area lies in the wider region around Stark County. Its landscape includes native mixed-grass prairie, wooded draws, and former pastureland, providing habitat for wildlife. Possible activities include wildlife watching, nature photography, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, camping, and environmental education. Some activities are seasonal. From Dickinson, take Interstate 94 east, State Highway 8 north to Richardton, then Old State Highway 10 east. Check road conditions before you travel.

For another scenic drive, the Old Red Old Ten Scenic Byway connects Mandan and Dickinson along a 100-mile route. Road conditions are also part of planning here. When choosing a vacation rental, you can start by deciding whether your priority is attending events, exploring cultural history, or enjoying trails and nature activities.
