Pierce County combines railroad history, regional culture, distinctive buildings and diverse opportunities for observing nature. When planning your trip, you can choose between museum visits, historic sites, bodies of water and birdwatching. A vacation apartment or vacation home in Pierce County is particularly suited to your plans if you do not want to limit your stay to a single attraction, but instead want to explore different themes.

History to See and Discover

At the Prairie Village Museum, you can explore Penn, North Dakota's historic railroad depot, step inside a Great Northern caboose and discover artifacts relating to the history of the people who worked in the railroad industry and traveled by train. The museum includes 24 historic buildings and seven exhibition halls arranged around a village square. This creates different ways to explore the region's history, from architecture to the development of transportation.

The Dale & Martha Hawk Museum is dedicated to local history, the community's heritage, traditional agricultural methods and the history of transportation in the region. It also preserves the 1917 Hackney Auto-Plow, considered the world's only still-operational two-way plowing machine. The Pierce County Courthouse was built in 1908 and was the first Buechner & Orth courthouse in North Dakota to use brown stone for the foundation and lighter-colored brick walls.

The Lyric Theatre in Rugby, which has been showing films since 1922, provides another historic highlight. As an additional place connected with rail transportation and local history, you can also include Rugby in your broader travel plans. Passengers still board and disembark from Amtrak trains there at the community-restored station.

Nature, Birds and Bodies of Water

Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located in Pierce County and is managed under the J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge. Pierce County provides seasonal and year-round habitat for hawks, eagles, falcons, marsh birds, shorebirds, pheasants, ducks, geese and sharp-tailed grouse. North Dakota Game and Fish also manages approximately 3,500 acres of state-owned wildlife management areas.

Rugby is located at the center of two major bird migration routes. There is a large concentration of snow geese, Canada geese and many species of ducks, which is advantageous for nature observers. If you are interested in wildlife observation, you can take this focus into account when choosing your accommodation and planning your excursions, without having to forgo culture and local history.

The bodies of water also offer their own points of interest. Balta Dam is a Class III warm-water fishing lake. Sand Lake has a moderate population of pike measuring 19 to 28 inches, an abundance of small perch and a low population of sunfish stocked in 2024. Those interested in fishing can take this focus into account when planning their trip.

Distinctive Attractions for Different Days of Travel

The Northern Lights Interpretive Center offers photographs of the aurora borealis by aurora expert Jay Brausch and displays actual images of the aurora at an interactive kiosk. The Niewoehner Bell Tower in Rugby is 30 feet high and contains 15 bells. Pierce County is also home to the Geographical Center of North America Monument, marked by a stone cairn.

When looking for accommodation, you can therefore first decide what character should define your trip: museums and transportation history, architecture and cinema, birdwatching or bodies of water. A vacation rental in Pierce County provides the right setting for combining these focuses at your own pace and shaping your days around the interests of your travel group.
