Dunn County: Badlands, Trails and History
Accommodation in Dunn County
Dunn County combines the wide-open landscapes of North Dakota with impressive Badlands, historic sites and a variety of trails. The Little Missouri River, North Dakota’s only designated Scenic River, runs through the county. Together with the prairie and Badlands, it shapes the character of the region and provides a diverse setting for a trip where nature, outdoor activity and history come together.
Badlands, Tablelands and Trails
The Killdeer Mountains are particularly striking. They consist of two large, flat-topped tablelands, cover about 115 square miles and rise approximately 700 feet above the surrounding plains. In addition, apart from the forests along the floodplains of the major rivers, they are home to the largest deciduous forest in southwestern North Dakota. The Killdeer Wildlife Management Area extends across this mountain landscape.
For longer tours, Little Missouri State Park offers more than 40 miles of trails through the Badlands. The trails are open to hikers and horseback riders. The park is also designated as an equestrian park and has 81 corrals as well as additional facilities for riders. Those planning a trip with different activity levels can choose between extended trails and shorter nature experiences here, without limiting the landscape to a single type of trip.
Another viewpoint is Medicine Hole Plateau. It offers expansive views of the landscape; access is via a challenging trail from a small park on the southeast side of South Killdeer Mountain. The stated distance alone does not replace personal trip planning, but it does make clear that this outing requires a more active day.
Wetlands, Wildlife and Activities
Lake Ilo National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 4,033 acres of wetlands, native prairie and planted grasslands. It offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, interpretation and fishing. The North Shore Trail is 1 mile long. Near its starting point, there is also an archaeological exhibit featuring a reconstructed stone tipi ring. This makes it possible to combine time by the water with nature observation and an insight into the region’s past.
There are specific destinations for other interests as well: Dunn Center Pump Trax is a paved BMX track for non-motorized wheeled activities and is suitable for children and adults. Medicine Hole Golf Course is a public nine-hole course with elevation changes of up to 120 feet. The Killdeer Mountain Roundup Rodeo takes place every year on the weekend of the Fourth of July and complements the landscape experiences with a regional tradition.
History and Cultural Orientation
The grounds of the Dunn County Historical Museum include a log cabin, a settler’s cabin, the Iota School building and the Manning Bank building. Admission is free for all visitors. Hutmacher Farm is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is considered an example of earthen construction by German-Russian immigrants. The Killdeer Mountain region historically contained hunting grounds as well as gathering and trading places for Sioux groups.
Killdeer Mountain Battlefield State Historic Site overlooks the location of a battle fought on July 28, 1864, between troops under the command of General Sully and a group of Sioux. Due to a road closure, the site is temporarily closed. Further insights into the region’s earlier history are offered by the Knife River Flint quarries: they were already used by Paleo-Indians as early as 11,000 BC, and the Lynch Knife River Flint Quarry is one of the largest Knife River flint quarries.
Route and Suitable Accommodation
The 64-mile Killdeer Mountain Four Bears Scenic Byway provides a sense of the area’s geography. It begins north of Manning on Highway 22, runs through Killdeer to Highway 23 and then continues eastward to New Town. The route connects the Badlands with the culture and history of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara, as well as with cowboy and rodeo traditions in west-central North Dakota.
When looking for a vacation rental or vacation home in Dunn County, it is worth making your preferred type of trip the starting point: nature trails, wetlands, equestrian activities, golf, historic sites or seasonal events each create different priorities. This allows you to choose accommodation according to your own daily rhythm and preferred experiences, without reducing the region to a single attraction.
