Stoddard County: Wetlands, Crowley’s Ridge and Culture

Wetlands and Nature Experiences

Mingo National Wildlife Refuge is located in Stoddard and Wayne counties. One specific experience there is the Swampwalk Nature Trail: the accessible boardwalk system winds for 0.8 miles through a bottomland hardwood forest. It also has more than 7 miles of multi-use trails open to bicycling, horseback riding and hiking. A permanent archery range features target distances of 10, 20, 30 and 40 yards, as well as a broadhead target.

Crowley’s Ridge and Active Days

Crowley’s Ridge Conservation Area is located on Crowley’s Ridge, a peninsula of gentle hills that stretches through the otherwise flat plains of the Missouri Bootheel. Two lakes and four ponds are stocked annually with channel catfish. Primitive camping is available in the area. This allows you to consider different types of stays when planning: a visit focused on trails and landscapes or a nature-oriented experience with an overnight stay in a basic camping format.

Culture, History and Events

The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library provides a cultural addition. It is the only museum in the United States dedicated to the history of the nation’s military newspaper and features more than 10,000 square feet of multimedia exhibition space. In Bloomfield, the Stoddard County Civil War Memorial Cemetery commemorates Confederate and Union soldiers with 150 graves.
