Cook County: Lake Superior, Trails, and Living History
Accommodation in Cook County
Cook County combines the vastness of Lake Superior with forests, rivers, gorges, and a diverse cultural history. For planning your trip, the question is therefore less about choosing a single highlight and more about the rhythm you want: Would you like to spend time by the water, drive through the boreal forest, learn about historic places, or combine hikes and winter trails? Your choice of vacation rental can be guided by which part of this landscape you want to be the focus of your vacation days.
Lake Superior, Gorges, and Scenic Trails
The North Shore Scenic Drive follows the Lake Superior shoreline for 154 miles as an All-American Road. It offers a different perspective on Cook County than the 57-mile Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway. The byway leads through boreal forest and along glacier-carved lakes to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at Saganaga Lake.
Shorter nature experiences can also be included in your plans. Temperance River Gorge is a crevice through which the river rushes on its way to Lake Superior. At the Kodonce River, a spur of the Superior Hiking Trail leads to Kodonce River Gorge. From the rest area at the Kodonce River, a walk in the area around the river mouth reaches a section of beach on Lake Superior. Ray Berglund State Wayside offers a 0.5-mile unpaved trail along cliffs overlooking the Onion River; from the opposite side of U.S. Highway 61 and the Gitchi Gami State Trail, there is also a view of Lake Superior.
Hiking, Winter Trails, and Different Daily Plans
Hiking opportunities in Cook County range from views of Lake Superior and waterfall experiences to summits, river hikes, and loop trails in the national forest. Hiking is possible year-round. During the colder season, more than 400 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails are also available. This allows you to switch between longer outings, a short path to a viewpoint, and winter activities when planning your trip, without committing your entire vacation to just one type of experience.
At Devils Track, access from the Gunflint Trail is via the Superior Hiking Trail. Devils Track Falls State Wayside can be reached by a two-mile hike in one direction. These specific distance details help you choose excursions that fit your own daily plans without treating the various trails as equivalent. For families with different interests, it may be useful when searching for a vacation rental to look for a location from which the preferred excursion directions fit into your personal travel plans.
Culture and History Along the Way
Grand Portage National Monument is managed jointly with an Indigenous nation. It covers 710 acres in two districts connected by the Grand Portage Trail. The Fort Charlotte district has primitive campsites, a canoe landing, and a destination for hikers from the lakeshore. During Rendezvous Days, costumed interpreters reenact life during the 18th-century fur trade.
Further insights are available at the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, which explores the cultural and natural history of the Gunflint Trail, and the North Shore Commercial Fishing Museum, which presents the maritime heritage of the North Shore. The Cross River Heritage Center is located in the only Tudor-style building in Cook County. North House Folk School complements these impressions with family programs, craft demonstrations, workshops, and residencies for craftspeople. With the traditionally rigged schooner Hjørdis, it also offers two-hour sailing excursions daily from late May through late September.
Places for Further Planning
If you would like to compare the different landscapes and excursion directions, you can include Lutsen, Tofte, and Grand Marais in your research in addition to Cook County. This keeps your choice of accommodation connected to the question of which combination of Lake Superior, the Gunflint Trail, culture, and hiking should shape your vacation.
