At Boiling Lake, by contrast, the trail itself is part of the experience: it leads through the Valley of Desolation, past sulphur springs, steaming mud pools, and volcanic terrain. Freshwater Lake is Dominica’s largest lake. The hike to Boeri Lake starts at Freshwater Lake: it is moderately difficult and 1¼ miles long. Boeri Lake sits at an elevation of 2,800 feet and covers about four acres. It is in the crater of an ancient volcano, where Morne Macaque—also known locally as Morne Micotrin—formed and which separates Boeri Lake from Freshwater Lake. The hike thus combines specific route details with a striking volcanic landscape.
