Laudat: Titou Gorge in the National Park

Laudat is a mountain village in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Titou Gorge is located here, a volcanic gorge where visitors can swim through a narrow canyon. Gorge and lake around Laudat

Freshwater Lake is near Laudat. The lake can be reached via the historic Chimen Létan, also known as “Lake Road.” Visitor facilities and a visitor centre are located near the lake. The distinction between the two landscapes can help you choose where to stay: Titou Gorge is in the village, while Freshwater Lake is in the surrounding area.

More nature destinations in the wider Saint George destination

In the wider Saint George destination, Freshwater Lake is Dominica’s largest lake. Boeri Lake is also part of this lake landscape: it lies at an elevation of 2,800 feet and covers about four acres. The lake is in the crater of an ancient volcano. Morne Macaque, also locally known as Morne Micotrin, formed in this crater and separates Boeri Lake from Freshwater Lake. The hike to Boeri Lake starts at Freshwater Lake and is a moderately challenging 1¼-mile trail.

Trafalgar Falls consists of the twin cascades of Papa Falls, at 85 metres, and Mama Falls, at 40 metres. A ten-minute walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform. A hot spring flows across the path to the waterfalls; visitors can swim in the smaller waterfall. The cascades’ differing heights and the opportunity to swim in the smaller waterfall give this destination its own distinctive character.

The Middleham Trail passes through the rainforest of Morne Trois Pitons National Park to the cascading Middleham Falls, which are 200 feet high. The hike takes 45 minutes and is easy to moderately challenging. The pool below the falls is suitable for swimming, although the water is a little cool. This lets you plan the rainforest trail, the waterfall and the cooler pool as different parts of the same outing.

For a longer hiking stage, take Segment 4 of the Waitukubuli National Trail: in the wider Saint George destination, it runs from Wotten Waven to Pont Casse, through the heart of Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The segment is about 13.3 kilometres long, can be completed in six hours and ends at the Waitukubuli National Trail Research and Interpretation Facility in Pont Casse. Along the way, there are views of five mountains. By comparison, the stated 45-minute hike to Middleham Falls is considerably shorter.

Boiling Lake is also in Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The trail there passes through the Valley of Desolation and by sulphur springs, steaming mud pools and volcanic terrain. Tours to Boiling Lake start in Laudat. Hikers must be accompanied by a certified local guide; check this requirement and the departure arrangements before your tour. Roseau Valley is also in the wider Saint George destination, within Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
