North Kazakhstan combines lake landscapes and hiking trails with archaeological sites and places of cultural remembrance. Its themes range from the Botai settlement, associated with early horse domestication, to Saka sites from the Early Iron Age. There are also memorial sites and institutions dedicated to literature and the history of the Kazakh Khanate. This allows you to consider nature, archaeology and culture as distinct focal points for your trip.

Lake Landscapes and Hiking Trails

The Imantau–Shalqar health and recreation zone encompasses two lakes with different characteristics: Imantau is a freshwater lake surrounded by pine forests, while Shalqar is a salt lake with therapeutic mud. The forest landscape and therapeutic mud, freshwater and salt lake give the natural area distinct features. This makes it possible to choose a specific nature-focused theme when planning your trip.

A three-and-a-half-hour hiking route leads to Buyan Gorge. It starts at the Imantau recreation base, passes through the Borovushka recreation area and returns to the base. The stated duration and route description provide a concrete framework for this excursion. Check the route details locally before setting out.

North Kazakhstan’s ecotourism offering includes hiking, bus and water routes with different durations and travel formats. You can therefore begin planning by deciding whether a hike or a bus or water route best suits your preferred focus.

Archaeological History

The Botai settlement is considered the place where horses were first domesticated around 6,000 years ago. The site is also home to an open-air museum. If you plan to visit, check its operating details before your trip.

The Baykara sanctuary is a restored Saka cult monument from the Early Iron Age. It was discovered in 1956 and served as a religious centre for the Saka tribes; today, it operates as an open-air museum. The description thus links its historical religious role with its present-day presentation as a place of worship.

The Ak-Iriy settlement is also a Saka site from the Early Iron Age. It covers 22,400 square metres. Finds and traces from the site include metallurgical furnaces, animal bones and cowrie shells, which were used as currency. Together with Botai, these sites illustrate the difference in period: Botai is associated with horse domestication around 6,000 years ago, while Ak-Iriy and Baykara date to the Early Iron Age.

Commemoration, Literature and History

Opened in 1999, the Karasai and Agyntai Batyrs memorial complex is dedicated to the legendary batyrs Karasai and Agyntai, defenders of the Kazakh Khanate. The architectural ensemble includes mausoleums over their burial sites and a mosque. Its dedication and architectural features give the complex a different historical focus from the archaeological sites.

The Magzhan Zhumabayev Centre is Kazakhstan’s first scientific and cultural centre dedicated to the poet and educator Magzhan Zhumabayev. It includes a reconstructed study of the poet, a library and a literary club. The Residence of Ablai Khan offers a political focus: its museum exhibition covers the Khan’s political activities, his diplomatic relations and his role in consolidating Kazakh statehood.

When looking for a holiday rental, your travel interests can guide your choice: Imantau–Shalqar offers lake landscapes, while the hike to Buyan Gorge has a clear duration of three and a half hours. Archaeological and cultural themes offer different focal points.
