Atyrau: Lotus, Birdlife and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Atyrau
The Atyrau Region offers a wide variety of discoveries: the vast nature reserve at the mouth of the Ural River, birds and lotus flowers, active routes, and places with archaeological and spiritual history. When choosing a holiday apartment, first consider which of these aspects will shape your trip—nature and activity, or culture and history.

Steppe, River and Birdlife
Akzhaiyk State Nature Reserve is in the Atyrau Region, at the mouth of the Ural River where it flows into the Caspian Sea, and covers 341,000 hectares. A total of 292 bird species have been recorded there, including 26 species on Kazakhstan’s Red List. These figures give a concrete impression of the reserve’s biodiversity and make birdlife an important focus for nature enthusiasts.
Narynqum is another distinctive natural area in the region. It covers 40,000 square kilometres and lies north of the city of Atyrau, in the Isatay and Kurmangazy districts. The globally rare lotus grows on the Kigash River in Kurmangazy District. As a seasonal natural phenomenon, it gives your trip planning a particular timing focus, although no specific month to visit can be inferred from this.
Active Days and Seasonal Nature
Four official ecological routes have been approved in Akzhaiyk Nature Reserve. The “World of the Steppe” route is 34 kilometres long and takes 4 hours and 10 minutes. It combines transport, hiking and cycling. Its length, duration and varied modes of travel give you a concrete framework for planning an active part of your trip.
The Kigash River is also of interest to recreational anglers: it is considered a popular fishing spot, and fishing is possible there year-round. Local access conditions may change, so check them before your visit. Visitors come to Tuzdy Köl in Inder District to take mud baths, which are considered therapeutic there. Lotus flowers, fishing and mud baths thus offer different nature experiences to consider when choosing the focus of your trip.
History and Spiritual Heritage
In the 13th century, Saraishyk was an important political, commercial and cultural centre on the Silk Road, as well as a key centre of the Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate. The Saraishyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve preserves more than 50,000 archaeological, ethnographic and natural history exhibits, including finds from excavations. The site therefore combines a significant historical role with an extensive collection.
The Atyrau Regional Local History Museum is located in the city of Atyrau. Its historical, archaeological and ethnographic exhibits cover subjects ranging from antiquity to the present day. Visitors interested in the region’s history can consider this collection alongside Saraishyk’s historical focus as another cultural theme for their trip.
At the Akmeshit site, Beket Ata built an underground mosque in 1771 and taught students there. Akmeshit Cemetery is a sacred site in the Atyrau Region, in Zhylyoy District, 30 kilometres northeast of the village of Akkiiztogay. Akmeshit offers overnight accommodation and a kitchen for visitors; people come to the site each year for spiritual recreation. As these are visitor facilities, it is advisable to check their current availability before travelling.
Another notable place in Zhylyoy District is Mount Imankara, 60 kilometres northeast of Kulsary. It is two kilometres long, 300 metres wide and 200 metres high, and contains Imankara Cave. The cave is two metres high, 2.5 metres wide and 25 metres deep; it consists of three corridors and niches. The cave may have been used as a shrine in ancient times—this remains a possibility.
Choose Accommodation to Suit Your Interests
The nature reserve and birdlife, a route lasting several hours, river fishing, and historical and spiritual sites each offer a different focus. When searching for a holiday apartment in Atyrau, it helps to decide first which of these themes you want your trip to centre on. Then plan the rest of your trip around the specific places you would like to visit.
