Experience Steppe Landscapes and Nature
The Bugyly mountain oasis in Shet District brings together granite mountains, gorges, clear springs, vast steppes and historic monuments. This landscape makes Bugyly a distinctive destination for anyone who wants to explore different themes of nature and history on their trip. The region is not just open steppe: in Buiratau National Park, it lies in a transition zone between the moderately arid and arid steppe subzones.
In the part of Buiratau National Park belonging to the Qaraghandy region, there is a 400-hectare reserve where deer and bison can be found. Alongside the mountains and gorges of Bugyly, this gives those who want to focus on natural areas and landforms another described natural setting to explore. The two destinations represent different landscape themes; the information does not present them as part of a shared route.
A specific challenge is the climb from the Torkora trail to the summit of Aksoran: it is about 3.4 km long, with an elevation gain of approximately 560–600 m. Aksoran rises to 1,565 m and is the highest point in the Kyzylarai Mountains and the Saryarka Kazakh Uplands.
The Region’s History and Culture
The Karkaraly Museum of History and Local Lore focuses on the history of the Karkaraly region, Saryarka’s natural heritage, archaeological monuments and the cultures of the peoples who live there. The museum is housed in a historic 19th-century building in Karkaraly. For a trip where you want to connect nature and culture, this breadth of subject matter offers a different perspective from the landscape itself.
The archaeological remains span several periods. The Karazharthas burial site in the Taldy River valley in Shet District is a Late Bronze Age monument, dated to the 13th–9th centuries BC. The complex is part of Taldy Historical and Archaeological Park. The Begazy-Dandybay mausoleums, also in Shet District, are megalithic burial structures from the Late Bronze Age (12th–8th centuries BC). The different dates refer to separate sites.
The region’s architectural history is also represented in several places. The house of merchant Khalulla Bekmetyev in Karkaralinsk was built in the second half of the 19th century. It is considered a notable example of merchant wooden architecture and is part of the historical and cultural heritage of the Qaraghandy region. The Kunanbay Kazhy Mosque in Karkaralinsk is a 19th-century architectural monument of local significance, as well as a historical, cultural and sacred site. It is associated with Kunanbay Uskenbayev, the father of Abai Kunanbayev.
Karkaraly National Park is also home to the Ranger House, a historic wooden monument on the shore of Lake Kim-Asar (Komissarovskoye), in the Komissarovka area. The building was constructed in 1910 and is one of the national park’s official tourist destinations. This adds another example of the region’s architectural history to the archaeological sites and historic houses.
Karaganda and Different Travel Interests
There are also different ways to spend the day in Karaganda itself. Central Park of Culture and Recreation has tree-lined avenues, a picturesque lake, modern amusement rides, a beach and sports facilities. If you like to alternate between a walk, time by the water, and sporting or entertainment activities, you’ll find several different options within this park.
The Karaganda Regional EcoMuseum is located at 47 Bukhar-Zhyrau Avenue in Karaganda. It is Kazakhstan’s first specialized environmental museum. Together with the Karkaraly Museum, it offers two different perspectives on culture and nature: one presents regional history, Saryarka’s natural heritage, archaeology and the cultures of the peoples who live there; the other specializes in the environment.
The Karkaraly Park and the shore of Lake Balkhash are named as popular recreational spots in the Qaraghandy region. These places offer a thematic starting point when looking for a holiday apartment in Karaganda.
