The Barsakelmes State Nature Reserve was established on 10 December 1939 on Barsakelmes Island. At the time, the island lay almost in the central part of the Aral Sea. Since 29 July 2020, the reserve has also included the 2,300-hectare “Delta” section at the mouth of the Syr Darya, where it flows into the Small Aral Sea. In the 9th to 11th centuries, the ancient city was one of the capitals of the Oghuz state; today, the settlement holds official status as a cultural heritage site of national significance. The monuments of the Zhetyasar oasis offer another link to the Silk Road: in 2012, they were included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as part of the serial transnational “Silk Roads” nomination.
Cultural sites and space exploration
Those interested in religious cultural sites can include the Korkyt Ata Memorial Complex in their travel plans. It is one of Kazakhstan’s sacred sites and is considered an important cultural tourism destination. The Sauysqandyq petroglyph complex offers a different experience: several thousand petroglyphs are found on both banks of the Sauysqandyq River, spread along a seven-kilometre stretch of the river. Balandy-2 adds to these historical destinations as one of Kazakhstan’s oldest domed temple complexes.
A distinct change of theme takes you to Baikonur. The museum complex preserves authentic rocket engines, spacesuits, spacecraft onboard equipment and cosmonauts’ personal belongings. Tourist tours are offered at the cosmodrome, where visitors can watch the launches of crewed and uncrewed spacecraft. These also include a visit to Launch Pad 1, known as “Gagarin’s Start.” This offers a very different perspective for choosing your travel focus than a nature reserve or archaeological sites.
Water activities and regional orientation
