Dmanisi: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The archaeological site of Dmanisi has yielded more hominid remains in a single layer than any other site in the world. Dmanisi is also the place where the skulls of a man and a woman who lived 1.8 million years ago were found.

Nature

Dmanisi is located on the volcanic Dmanisi Plateau on both banks of the Mashavera River. On the plateau, the gorges reach depths of 70 to 80 metres. The Mashavera Canyon is the most important gorge of the Dmanisi Plateau.

History

The archaeological site preserves a 322-metre-long defensive wall with towers, residential and agricultural buildings, a palace and a bathhouse. An open-air museum has been established at the site, where traces of ancient people, including Zezva and Mzia, were discovered. The site also includes a 200-metre-long secret tunnel.

Near Dmanisi, the Dmanisi Museum-Reserve preserves a multi-layered archaeological landscape. It includes a medieval town with a church, defensive wall, household buildings and residential areas, as well as layers from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age.

Dmanisi Sioni is a three-church basilica dating from the 6th century. Its richly decorated western gatehouse was added in the first quarter of the 13th century. The skulls found in Dmanisi are exhibited at the Georgian National Museum.

Culture

Dmanisi has the Zinaida Kverenchkhiladze State Drama Theatre. The Dmanisi Culture and Arts Center houses an archaeological exhibition hall displaying material from the Dmanisi municipality. More than 190 historical and architectural monuments, mostly from the Middle Ages, are located in the area around Dmanisi.
