Asureti: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Asureti was founded in 1818 as the German settlement of Elisabethal. The village preserves material evidence of its German colonial period: residential and farm buildings, a unique wine cellar that was granted cultural heritage status in 2017, a Lutheran church built in the Gothic style in 1871, and houses in an older German architectural style. Asureti is also home to houses built of white stone and clay without using nails.
Culture and History
The surviving material monuments of the German settlement also include a sulfur bath. The German settlers developed agriculture and livestock farming in Asureti. The German cemetery features surnames engraved on the gravestones of settlers and their descendants from various parts of Germany.
Asureti is located on the banks of the Asuretiskhevi River.
Wine
Asuretuli Shala is a dry red wine with a light or dark ruby-red color. The Asuretuli Shala microzone is located in Asureti; the processing of the grapes and the production of Asuretuli Shala wine take place exclusively within the microzone. Bottling of Asuretuli Shala is permitted in Georgia.
Historically, the Shala wine produced by the German settlers was sold in Yerevan and Baku, as well as within Georgia. Vineyards were established near Asureti on the banks of the Algeti River. In 1931, a three-storey German-style cellar was built in a vineyard near Asureti for wine production and bottling.
Asuretuli Shala was granted protected designation of origin status at a ceremony on 24 November 2022. Asuretuli Shala is described as a rare grape variety associated with the German farmer Otto Schall. The wine is made from Asuretuli Shavi grapes grown in the microzone; in addition, up to 15% Tavkveri and Shavkapito combined may be used.
