Trails and Nature in Algeti National Park
Algeti National Park has five ecotourism routes, including horse-riding and hiking trails. One of them is the marked Royal Ridge Trail: the 16-kilometre route is a circular trail.
The national park’s visitor centre also has the Rope Park ecotourism attraction, with a family zone and a youth zone. As conditions at visitor facilities can change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting. Another striking natural feature is the 900-year-old mountain oak, known as the “Patriarch Oak.”
The Tsalka Reservoir attracts fishing enthusiasts. The remains of a 10th- to 11th-century settlement also lie beneath its waters. They become visible when the water level drops; whether the traces can be seen therefore depends on the water level. Nature and archaeology do not meet here as separate subjects: the historic settlement is part of the reservoir landscape, even if it is not always visible.
Dmanisi and Early Human History
The archaeological site of Dmanisi is particularly well known for the finds of Zezva and Mzia, who are described as the first European hominins. A total of five skulls have been discovered there. Among the oldest finds are Stone Age weapons, some of which are 1.8 million years old. The different types of finds make Dmanisi a place where human remains and early tools together contribute to our picture of the past.
The history of the settlement of Samshvilde also stretches far back: the town was settled in the 4th to 3rd century BC. Traces of a water supply system were found among the remains. A different form of historic fortification can be seen at the medieval Kveshi Fortress near the village of Kveshi in Bolnisi Municipality. It stands on an almost inaccessible rocky cliff. The fortress is surrounded by a 220-metre-long wall that is up to eight metres high in places; access is through a tunnel cut into the cliff.
Churches, Inscriptions and Museum
Bolnisi Sioni was built between 478 and 493 as a three-nave basilica. Three inscriptions on its walls are among the oldest known fragments of Georgian script, after the Georgian inscriptions of Palestine. Bolnisi Sioni was also the first monument in Georgia to be decorated with bas-reliefs and carvings. Its architecture, written records and decorations offer different ways of exploring the building’s history.
The Bolnisi Museum displays copies of Georgian inscriptions from the 5th century. Its exhibition covers human development from the Eneolithic to the Middle Ages. In Ktsia, the monastery dates from the 8th to 9th century; Ktsia Church is a three-church basilica. The monastery on Mount Elia near Bolnisi is active, and a service is held there daily. Tsopi Fortress, in turn, was a strategic site from the 6th to 13th century.
