Mjöbäck combines a remarkable church history with a bathing area, riverside landscapes and regional traces of craftsmanship. Anyone planning a trip to Mjöbäck can choose between cultural discoveries and days by the water. The different themes can help you determine the right focus for your stay and your search for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Mjöbäck.

Church history with many specific details

Mjöbäcks kyrka was built in 1851 after the former church in the old cemetery on the other side of the road was declared dilapidated. Its history is brought particularly vividly to life by several items of church furnishings. The baptismal font was made by Carl Johan Johansson from Tokabo. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was donated to the church by Johannes Bengtsson and his wife Lina from Klackhult.

The two bells also tell of different eras. The larger bell weighs 450 kg and was recast in Jönköping after cracking while being rung in 1831. The smaller bell dates from the time of Gustav III and was cast in 1773. The pulpit, altarpiece and number boards were made by Johannes Johansson in Tokabo; he was very likely assisted by his elderly father, Johannes Andersson from Ölsbo.

Mjöbäcks kyrka acquired its present appearance through extensive renovation work carried out in 1991–1992 by church painter Rose Bergström from Lidhult. Rose Bergström was also responsible for the colour scheme, based on old models. Another detail is the runner: it was woven at Kasthalls in Kinna and designed by textile artist Elisabet Brenner from Holsljunga. For travellers interested in culture, this creates a picture that brings together architectural history, regional names and artistic craftsmanship.

Korrasjön: bathing area outside the village

Mjöbäck also has an excursion destination by the water. Korrasjön is assigned to the locality of Mjöbäck in the list of municipal bathing areas in Svenljunga Municipality. Korrasjöns badplats is a short distance outside Mjöbäck. From Mjöbäck, you can reach the bathing area by driving towards Öxabäck, turning left and following the signs to the bathing area.

There is a small sandy beach, a lawn and a barbecue area on site. At Korrasjöns badplats, you can barbecue and jump into the water from the bathing jetty. This makes it possible to organise your stay differently from a purely culture-oriented day: you can combine a visit to Mjöbäcks kyrka with time by the lake or focus entirely on the water and spending time outdoors. The information about the beach, lawn, barbecue area and bathing jetty also provides concrete criteria when considering what type of holiday you would like to spend in Mjöbäck.

Riverside landscapes and distinctive nature

Högvadsån is also part of the natural history around Mjöbäck. The population of freshwater pearl mussels near Mjöbäck is isolated from the population within the Högvadsån Natura 2000 site. A survey commissioned by Svenljunga Municipality estimated that around 5,000 living freshwater pearl mussels occur along an approximately five-kilometre stretch of Högvadsån from Stora Hallongen downstream towards Mjöbäck. The approximate distance and the estimate of the number of mussels show that nature here can be understood not only through general landscape views, but also through a very specific river-related topic.

Mjöbäck as a starting point for different days of travel

For your planning, you can therefore look at Mjöbäck from several perspectives. A culture-oriented stay focuses on Mjöbäcks kyrka and the craftsmen, artists and historical dates associated with it. If you prefer spending time outdoors, you can focus on Korrasjöns badplats and the riverside landscape. For travel planning by bicycle, the new pedestrian and cycle path connection between Överlida and Mjöbäck is another specific point of reference; it was inaugurated on 9 August.

Tokabo Hembygdsgård is run by the Mjöbäck local heritage association and complements the cultural-historical side of the locality with a local heritage perspective. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Mjöbäck, you can decide in advance whether your accommodation should primarily serve as a quiet base for days in nature, a base for cultural exploration or the centre of a varied trip.
