On the shores of Lake Vänern, Lidköping combines urban history, art, nature and a wide range of experiences on the water. Together with Götene and Mariestad, Lidköping is part of the Vänerskärgården med Kinnekulle UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Culture and history

Limtorget is Lidköping’s oldest district and the only surviving part of the old town, which escaped the great city fire of 1849. The square is home to a printing museum and an arts and crafts workshop. The collection of Limtorgstryckeriet is cared for and displayed at Limtorget by the Vänermuseet museum with the support of volunteers. Visits to Limtorgstryckeriet can be arranged on request.

The Vänermuseet museum itself also explores different aspects of life by the lake: its collections focus on shipping, trade, the lives of lighthouse communities and the everyday lives of small-scale fishermen. Lidköpings konsthall offers a different cultural experience with exhibitions by local, national and international artists. It also offers guided tours of exhibitions, workshops and other programme items.

Water

At Framnäs strandpark, a long waterfront promenade extends out onto a newly built pier. There is also a 150-metre-long jetty where you can swim in deeper water. Boardwalks and jetties run around a small lake, offering opportunities to observe the park’s wildlife and plant life. Framnäsbadet is a heated outdoor swimming pool on the shores of Lake Vänern. The facility includes a 50-metre pool, diving towers at 3, 5 and 10 metres, a diving board, a 20 × 6-metre pool and a paddling pool.

For activities on the water, Lidköpings kanotförening rents canoes for paddling on the Lidan towards the Flian. SUP boards and kayaks are available for rent at the beach by KronoCamping in Lidköping.

Nature and trails

Råda Ås is a recreational area about 5 kilometres from the town centre, with hiking trails, running and training routes, an outdoor fitness area and a viewpoint. The approximately 13-kilometre-long, blue-marked Traneberg Trail begins at Läckö Golf, runs close to the shore through various types of natural landscape and passes through varied terrain. Another route is the 5-kilometre Strandpromenaden route in Lidköping. It leads from the marina and Framnäs strandpark along Lake Vänern through Tofta to Giacomina.

In the wider vicinity of Lidköping, Östra Sannorna is a municipal nature reserve. The nature reserve is located right next to the town and offers opportunities for hiking and swimming. A boardwalk trail with information panels and a birdwatching tower runs through Östra Sannorna. Also in the wider vicinity of Lidköping, Naturum Vänerskärgården–Victoriahuset is intended as a gateway to Djurö National Park and other natural areas of the Vänern archipelago.

Villa Giacomina is an 18th-century English landscape park with winding paths, streams, bridges and a summerhouse. The woodland at Villa Giacomina is mostly open and easy to walk through. In Råda, the stadsnära lantgård farm gives families the opportunity to visit animals and experience life on a farm.

Food and crafts

The Rörstrand Museum includes a café serving a regionally produced selection of open sandwiches on homemade bread, pastries and seasonal light meals on Rörstrand porcelain. In the wider vicinity of Lidköping, Spikens Fiskehamn on Kållandsö offers freshly smoked Vänern fish, freshwater lake fish, value-added products, delicacies and vendace roe.

Getting around

The cycling network in Lidköping comprises four main routes connecting the town’s districts with the centre. Lidköping can be explored using self-guided tours in the Läckö-Kinnekulle app.
