Lysekil is located on the coast of Bohuslän, where the Gullmarsfjord opens out towards the sea. Particularly striking is the Stångehuvud nature reserve: this is where the sea meets the granite cliffs, and several marked trails run through the area.

Nature and trails

In the northern part of Stångehuvud, an accessible trail leads from a car park to a viewpoint. Lysekil also has four signposted town walks ranging from 2 to 5.5 kilometres in length. The red town walk leads from Rosvikstorg through the guest harbour, past the Havets Hus aquarium, towards Vikarvet Museum. The Västerhavet promenades lead from Lysekil’s southern and northern harbours via Ålevik, Lilla Långevik, Stora Långevik and Valbodalen back to the centre. The entire Västerhavet promenade is accessible.

Sea and coastal life

Havets Hus has smaller and larger display and tunnel aquariums with information about the animal species on view. The tour of the Havets Hus aquarium leads from the shore area through various habitats of the West Sea to the deep seabed. Local providers in the Lysekil area offer seal safaris, fishing trips, kayaking, snorkelling and diving. On a kayak or canoe trip, you can paddle along the green coast of the Gullmarsfjord, past the granite cliffs at Islandsberg and Stångehuvud, and out towards the outer archipelago in the Västerhavet. In summer, Havets Hus offers, among other things, seal safaris and night walks.

Culture and history

Vikarvet Museum provides insights into life on the Bohuslän coast in the past. It also presents the history of fishing and the canning industry and documents Lysekil’s heyday as a centre of stonecutting with tools, pictures and stories. Lysekil began to grow as early as the 16th century in the Gamlestan area. There, a historical walk leads through cobbled streets and narrow lanes.

Gullmarsvallen also combines local history with sports history. The site is surrounded by a unique granite wall built by unemployed stonemasons in the 1930s. In 2003, the Swedish Sports Confederation, Riksidrottsförbundet, ranked Gullmarsvallen as one of Sweden’s 100 most important sites of sporting history.

Shellfish experiences

During the shellfish experiences, visitors can fish for themselves, take crabs and lobsters out of the pots, and harvest oysters and mussels.

Ferry connections

The Gullmarsleden ferry service is operated by Trafikverket; information about departures and possible traffic disruptions is available from Trafikverket. Ferry route 847, which operates year-round, connects Lysekil’s Southern Harbour with Fiskebäckskil’s pier and Östersidan on Skaftö.
