Rottneros: Park, Culture and Family Experiences
Accommodation in Rottneros
Rottneros is a destination for anyone who wants to combine culture, landscaped surroundings and varied days with children. At its heart is Rottneros Park, where a historic manor house, different garden styles, sculptures, theatre and activities for younger visitors come together. The park also includes a bathing area on Lake Fryken. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Rottneros can therefore choose the village as a base for a stay where exploration and relaxing hours are given equal priority.
Rottneros Park between the Manor House and Garden Art
Rottneros Park is home to Rottneros Manor, also known as the Ekeby of legend. The place inspired Selma Lagerlöf to write imaginative descriptions of the lavish life of the cavaliers in “The Saga of Gösta Berling”. The park itself was created by Svante Påhlson between 1932 and 1959. This combination of literary associations and landscaped surroundings gives a visit a distinctive cultural character.
In the park, you will find an Italian villa inspired by classicism, French Baroque gardens and an English park. The arboretum was established in 1974 by Ebba Horn af Åminne, the daughter of Svante and Greta Påhlson. During a stroll, you can therefore experience different forms of garden and landscape design without limiting the day to a single theme.
Sculptures, Theatre and Special Discoveries
Art enthusiasts can visit the Carl Eldh Parterre, which features eleven sculptures by Carl Eldh. It is probably the largest permanent collection of his works. Another notable work is “Skremt”, an original granite sculpture by Gustav Vigeland and his first attempt at using granite as a sculptural material. Alongside the gardens, individual works such as these give the park an additional cultural dimension.
In 1999, a permanent theatre stage was created at Berättarladan, modelled on Shakespeare’s “The Globe”. The complex also includes a costume exhibition featuring around one hundred costumes by Inger Hallström Stinnerbom from earlier theatre productions. On performance days, this exhibition opens two hours before the performance begins in summer, and one hour beforehand for other events. If you want to give your stay a cultural focus, this makes it possible to combine your visit with an event in a planned way.
Family Time in the Park and by Lake Fryken
Rottneros Park offers several different options for a holiday with children. The Nils Holgersson Adventure Park is located on the site of the former bird park, which has since been redesigned accordingly. The Barnens lekpark children’s playground offers activities for children aged 2 to 11. Depending on their age and interests, families can therefore choose between a story-themed adventure and a classic playground.
The Rottneros Park bathing area is located on a shallow, sheltered bay of Lake Fryken. There are tables, benches, an outdoor toilet and a barbecue area on site. This creates another option for planning your day: after enjoying garden art, theatre or the playground, you can spend time by the water without leaving the park’s thematic setting.
Practical Information for Your Stay
Rottneros Park has been adapted so that everyone can visit; a wheelchair can also be borrowed on site. There is a café at the entrance serving light lunches, ice cream and fika. These facilities can make planning your day easier when you want to alternate between longer visits, playtime and a break. Accommodation in Rottneros is particularly suitable for travellers who want to organise their days flexibly between culture, gardens, water and activities for children, without limiting their stay to a single activity.
