Skattkärr lies directly on the shore of Lake Vänern and combines views of the water with a clearly recognizable local history and opportunities for outdoor activities. From Skattkärr, there are views across the waters of Lake Vänern. Karlstad can be reached by bicycle or, at certain times, by bus. This gives you an interesting mix of landscapes, local history and different day-trip destinations when planning your journey.
Outdoor Activities and Winter Experiences
A specific starting point for active days is Skattkärr’s exercise/ski trail. The illuminated trail is approximately 2.5 kilometers long. In winter, cross-country ski tracks are prepared on this exercise/ski trail by Skattkärrs IF. Depending on the season, you can therefore include either the illuminated trail or the prepared cross-country ski tracks in your daily plans.
Skattkärr’s exercise/ski trail begins at Skogsvallen sports ground and passes under the E18 into the forest area north of the road. This precise location helps with orientation if you would like to combine your stay with time spent in nature. Those traveling with different interests can combine a day by the water with time in the forest area or an excursion to Karlstad.
Traces of Local and Industrial History
The name Tegelparken also refers to the area’s industrial past. The park was named after Skattkärr’s former brick and tile factory, which closed in 1959 after a fire. However, the history goes back further: the area now known as Skattkärr was called Björknäs until the 1860s. Södra Skattkärrssågen was established in the 1860s as the area’s first industry.
Further dates show how Skattkärr developed as an industrial and railway community. As part of the construction of the Nordvästra stambanan railway, the train reached Skattkärr in 1869; this marked the beginning of its development as a railway community. In 1899, Olof Tjerneld had a brickworks built in what is now the locality of Skattkärr. In 1902, the company began operating a tile factory in Skattkärr, mainly producing tiles for tiled stoves. These milestones provide a framework for a walk around the area, even though they describe different periods in its development.
Older road layouts that can still be recognized include Skattkärrsvägen, which partly follows the former country road; Stationsvägen; Ivar Tjerneldsgatan; the straighter present-day route of Annelundsvägen; and the winding, gravel-surfaced Ängtorpsvägen. Along the first three roads and near Bangårdsgatan, where the station building once stood, there are residential houses from the early 20th century. Anyone interested in local landscapes and everyday history can include these streets in their own exploration.
