Segerstad – Nature, Hiking Trails and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Segerstad
Segerstad combines a protected archipelago landscape with varied trails and an unusually multifaceted cultural landscape. The islands of Segerstad’s archipelago are characterised by wind-shaped pine forest, wetlands and open sandy beaches. At the same time, the archipelago is a nature reserve and part of the Natura 2000 network. If you are planning a trip in which nature experiences and historical discoveries are equally important, Segerstad offers several different ways to explore them.
Experience Nature and Choose Your Trails
The mainland area of Segerstad’s archipelago can be reached without a boat. One specific destination is Arnäs udde: the route there is a gravel path and is suitable for wheelchairs. Arnäs udde is located about 1.5 kilometres from the main car park and has a wind shelter.
From Arnäs udde, a constructed boardwalk continues to Hamnholmarna. There you will find another wind shelter, a wooden deck, a dry toilet and a fire pit. These individual facilities provide clear points of interest for the outing without requiring you to plan your day around a specific length of stay. Those travelling with children can choose the trails according to the desired character of the day: the area can be explored through specific destinations, short distance details and a variety of landscape impressions.
Several marked options are available for further walking experiences. The hiking trail to Onsösundet is about 1.5 kilometres long and runs mostly along an old track. The Blue Loop starts at the main car park and is about 2.5 kilometres long. This information can help you better assess which trail fits into your day’s plans. The distances do not indicate a walking time or the individual effort involved.
Island History and Special Traces
There are four stone labyrinths on Stora Axelön. They complement the nature experiences with a visible detail of cultural history. Segerstad’s cultural landscape also contains four larger concentrations of Bronze Age and Iron Age monuments near the shore of Lake Vänern and the farmland behind it. These are closely connected with Segerstad’s old and new medieval church villages.
Segerstad’s old church village itself is also worth a closer look. Closely associated with it are a total of four burial grounds with burial mounds and stone settings. The undivided church village, with the character of a linear village, features period-typical residential and farm buildings that are closely connected to the village road. This makes history tangible not only through individual monuments, but also through the structure of the village.
Segerstad’s history also includes boatbuilding that existed there for a period of time and the importance of fishing in Lake Vänern as a resource for households. In Segerstad Church, the organ is considered to be of national interest because some of its pipes almost certainly come from the former organ of Karlstad Cathedral from the 18th century. During a stay, this makes it possible to combine nature trails, island traces, village history and ecclesiastical cultural history.
