Holiday apartment in Gnesta – historic trails, nature and culture
Gnesta combines historic trails, diverse natural areas and insights into the culture of Sörmland. There are 21 nature reserves in the municipality, which can be explored year-round. In addition, there are swimming spots, fishing waters, museums, exhibitions and routes that connect natural and cultural attractions. Gnesta is therefore not defined by a single excursion destination, but by many different landscapes and areas offering a range of experiences.
Nature and water
The Marvikarna and Krampan area offers hiking trails, barbecue facilities, swimming spots and opportunities for ice skating in winter. At the same time, the area is characterised by a rich variety of birdlife, interesting geology, toilets, barbecue areas and other recreational facilities. The Högtorn observation tower stands on Fräkensjöberget east of Lake Klämmingen. The route there is 2.6 km each way; section 13 of the Sörmlandsleden trail also passes the viewpoint.
A special geological feature is Kammarstenen, an erratic boulder transported here by the inland ice. Its cracks and passages are large enough to crawl into and explore. The boulder lies directly beside the road near section 19 of the Sörmlandsleden trail. Parking is available at the Sörmlandsleden information-board car park.
Trails and historical traces
Gnestaleden is a 10 km hiking and cycling route between Gnesta and Karlslund. Near Hållsta, it passes two burial grounds from the Late Iron Age. At Jakobsberg in Björnlunda, a nature loop with a birdwatching tower is also part of Gnestaleden.
The historic Eriksgatan runs for 21 km through the Gnesta area, from Björnlunda hembygdsgård in Björnlunda parish to Aspa in the south. Along the section of Eriksgatan in the Gnesta area, there are around 15 well-maintained prehistoric sites, cultural heritage monuments, oak groves and natural areas. A longer circular route is Näckrosleden, which passes several natural and cultural attractions in the Gnesta area. Stefanie Schlosser offers hiking experiences in the Sörmland countryside, including hikes and day tours.
Culture and mining history
Skottvångs Mining Museum displays objects and photographs related to mining and charcoal burning, as well as the everyday history of the forest areas. Former miners are also represented in photographs, text and sound. Skottvångs Grufva preserves a historic mining environment; a guided tour leads to 19 historic buildings and objects.
In Åkers bergslag, 48 red posts decorated with pennants tell the story of the journey of iron from ore to cannon, as well as of the people who lived and worked at the ironworks. The open-air exhibition in Åkers bergslag is accessible around the clock every day of the year. In Gnesta, the “Historien i Sörmland” exhibition uses 27 red posts decorated with pennants to explain the history of the railway and infrastructure town.
The Gnesta-Kalle Museum displays old photographs, records, posters and, above all, accordions. It thus complements the historic trails and mining sites with a collection focusing on something quite different.
Water and other experiences
There are six municipal bathing sites in Gnesta Municipality, as well as other natural swimming spots. Frösjöstrand is a quiet swimming spot in the centre of Gnesta, just a few steps from the railway station. There are also several popular fishing waters in the municipality. Fishing is possible from a boat or from the shore; there is also information about waters with open access and the purchase of fishing licences.
Marvikarna is part of a canoe tour that begins in Åkers Styckebruk and ends in Trosa. The varied 18-hole golf course offers a different landscape experience: It is situated in a hilly wooded and parkland setting with views of Lakes Misteln and Kyrksjön. Lagårn i Ullsta offers exhibitions, concerts and events in a natural setting. A cooking course led by experienced chefs ends with a shared meal.
