Discover Eskilstuna: Holiday apartment between nature and culture

Eskilstuna combines varied landscapes with Swedish industrial history, historic monuments and diverse experiences. Long paths lead through forests and fields, while museums, open-air sites and Parken Zoo offer different ways to experience culture and leisure activities.

Nature

The Gyllenhielmska Trail runs for 34.1 kilometres from the Årby recreation area via Sundbyholm marina to Björsundsbron. Along the way, it passes through forests, over rocky heights and alongside fields. Four natural stages divide the trail; it can be started or left near bus stops and car parks.

A different landscape can be found in the Hedlandet nature reserve. From there, there are views of the Hyndevadsån, which connects Hjälmaren with Mälaren along its course. The reserve encompasses a mosaic landscape of rocks, coniferous forest, arable land, pasture, deciduous forest, wetlands and small bogs. Several paths lead through the area.

There is also a remarkable natural area within the city: Ekeby Wetland is Sweden's largest man-made wetland. It covers 40 hectares with eight large ponds, lies on the outskirts of Eskilstuna and is open to visitors around the clock all year round. At the bird towers, visitors can observe birds and explore the species-rich plant life. In total, there are 24 nature reserves in Eskilstuna and Torshälla, with diverse plant and animal life.

On Mälaren lies Sundbyholm Beach, with a sandy beach, jetty, barbecue area, toilet and benches. The beach area also has an accessible ramp.

Culture

Swedish industrial history is the focus at the Munktell Museum, which presents 180 years of this development. A visit to the museum is not limited to looking, as visitors are allowed to climb onto old vehicles, sit on them, touch them and play with them.

Rademachersmedjorna is one of the best-preserved 17th-century environments in Sweden. Today, the site is an open-air museum with craftspeople and shops. It is accessible around the clock, and admission is free. At Jutemarks Smide, visitors can also take part in a bookable introductory blacksmithing experience.

Among the outstanding historic sites is Sigurdsristningen. It is considered one of Sweden's most important prehistoric monuments and, among the prehistoric monuments and runic inscriptions of Södermanland, is a unique 11th-century runic inscription. The depiction shows various episodes from the saga of Sigurd Fafnesbane; the text refers to the construction of a bridge over Ramsundet. Visitors can find information on information boards, via the IZI-Travel app or as part of a bookable guided tour. Bus route 18 stops at Mora vsk, which is approximately 500 metres from Sigurdsristningen.

The Eskilstuna City Museum is a historical museum on Faktoriholmarna in the centre of Eskilstuna. It features exhibitions for adults and children.

Experiences

Parken Zoo presents unique and endangered animal species. Animal presentations and feedings take place there every day throughout the entire season. Parken Zoo also includes an amusement park with rides and family experiences. Bookable special tours focusing on animals complement the offerings; these include tours of lemurs, otters and petting animals.

Cycling

The Torshälla–Vallby cycling tour is just under 40 kilometres long and starts and ends at Eskilstuna Central Station. It passes through one of the culturally and historically richest cultural landscapes in Södermanland. A shorter route is the Banvallen Eskilstuna–Ärla–Eklången route: this easy-to-ride, almost 20-kilometre-long paved cycle path runs through beautiful, lush landscapes. Along the old railway line, visitors can cycle or ride horses.

Sundbyholm

Sundbyholm is also shaped by events. A major annual event is the Breeders' Crown. In addition, Sundbyholm hosts elite-level trotting races, show-jumping tournaments and other events.
