Finja combines Romanesque church art with varied trails around Lake Finjasjön. Those looking for a blend of culture, scenery, and active exploration during their holiday will find several options here for planning their days. A holiday apartment in Finja can serve as a base for a range of activities: You can learn about the history of the area, choose a marked trail, or look out for waterfowl at the boat harbour.

Romanesque Church and Medieval Traces

Finja Church is dated to the latter part of the 1130s. Its Romanesque design comprises a nave, a chancel, and an east-facing apse. The Romanesque lime paintings are particularly impressive: They were uncovered in 1932 and dated to around 1140. For visitors interested in culture, the church offers a tangible connection to the medieval history of the area.

Historical traces can also be found outside the church. The old country road between Finja and Vankiva has partly preserved its historic route along a ridge. Details like these make a walk more than just a journey through the landscape; they also draw attention to the routes that have shaped the village and its surroundings.

Hiking Trails around Lake Finjasjön

The Finjasjöleden trail around Lake Finjasjön is marked in pink and passes Finja Church, which dates from the 12th century. This allows you to combine the lakeshore, a trail experience, and a site of cultural and historical interest in a single day plan, without having to limit yourself to just one type of exploration.

The Hovdalaleden, Finjasjöleden, and Skåneleden North–South trails run near Finja and Mölleröd, north of Lake Finjasjön. This gives you a range of trail names and route areas to choose from when planning. If you are travelling with children or want to take different interests within your group into account, it may be useful to decide in advance which route and focus you want for the day. The trails offer opportunities for active hours, while the church or lookout tower can provide a quieter destination.

Lookout Tower, Waterfowl, and Orientation on Site

There is a lookout tower at Finja’s boat harbour. From there, you can observe various waterfowl; you may also see ospreys or western marsh harriers. Observation is therefore a matter of being there at the right moment, but it adds an appealing natural element to a break by the water. Those who prefer to experience the landscape attentively rather than quickly can deliberately include this spot in their day’s itinerary.

For orientation on site, parking is available in Finja by, south of Finja Church; a sign points to the lookout tower. In addition, Skånetrafiken bus route 511 serves the Hässleholm–Örkelljunga route. From the bus stop in Finja, it is only a few hundred metres to the orange markings of the Skåneleden North–South trail. This information is particularly helpful if you want to combine your journey to the area with the start of a hike.

Important Note about the Current Route

At present, the GPX files for the Finjasjöleden and Hovdalaleden do not correspond to the actual routes. The Alslingan in the north-eastern part of the trail system is being dismantled; the trail markings in the terrain instead lead through Finja by. When planning, therefore, follow the markings on site rather than relying solely on digital route data.

Finja is therefore suitable for travellers who want to combine culture and nature at different paces. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether to focus on the trails around the lake, Finja Church, or observations at the boat harbour.
