Holiday apartment in Bromölla: Discover lakes, coast and culture

Bromölla lies in the transition zone between the Kristianstad Plain to the south and the hilly lake and wetland landscape to the north. This creates a varied setting of water, forests, coast and cultural sites: Lake Ivösjön forms the western boundary of the municipality, and its deeply indented shoreline borders Lake Levrasjön. The municipality is therefore characterised both by a flat, shallow, stony coast with many skerries and by wooded inland landscapes.

Culture

Bromölla’s industrial history is traced at the Iföverken Industrial Museum, from the founding of the works in 1887 to the company as it exists today. Historical working methods and a selection of earlier products are on display. The museum also includes a ceramics workshop; rooms for temporary art exhibitions complement the offerings. Scanisaurus, Europe’s largest stoneware fountain, stands in Ifötorget in the centre of Bromölla.

The history of the landscape is also present. Havsdrakarnas Hus is located in the waiting hall of Bromölla railway station and displays fossils and other remains from the Cretaceous period. Fossil-washing experiences can be booked through Åsens Fältstation. S:t Petri Church was designed by the architect Carl Rosell and has interior furnishings by Gisela Trapp. The building was constructed in the first half of the 12th century in the Romanesque style. Wall paintings in the centre of the chancel arch and a medieval altarpiece have survived from this period of construction.

Landscape and water

The Holjeån valley is enclosed by the two bedrock massifs Västanåberget and Ryssberget. In the northern part of the municipality are beech forests that form one of the largest contiguous beech woodland areas in the county. Between these wooded areas and the lakes runs the Gustavsbergsleden, a 23-kilometre circular hiking trail. The route is suitable for hiking and mountain biking, passes through wooded areas between Lake Ivösjön and Lake Levrasjön, goes by the ruins of the former Gustavsberg boarding house and reaches the Brantahallar nature area.

The Holjeåleden is a water route from Östafors in the north to Lake Ivösjön in the south. Along it, you paddle through the unspoilt nature of the Holjeån valley. Along the water route, you can stop, discover sights, barbecue and fish; there are also accommodation options along the river. There are bathing spots at Lake Ivösjön in the municipality of Bromölla. Valje also has a seaside bathing spot with salt water.

Trails and activities

The 4-kilometre Lilla Kungsleden begins near the main town of Bromölla. It passes the avenue and park of Årup Castle and through a deer enclosure, then continues near the Skräbeån to its mouth on the Baltic Sea.

For cycling tours, the Humleslingan describes a 50-kilometre loop around Skåne’s largest lake. The route passes through natural and cultural landscapes and by around 40 sights. The circuit runs along ordinary paved main roads; gravel roads and a former railway embankment path can be chosen as detours from the road.

Local character

A unique cultural feature of the area is its cement fences. They stretch for kilometres along gardens throughout the municipality of Bromölla. The regional character also includes locally associated products such as fruit, berries, vegetables, honey, cider, jam, fish and meat. These products are available at restaurants, cafés and farm shops.
