Smedstorp: Holiday apartment amid cultural landscapes and history
The village of Smedstorp is surrounded by an open, agricultural landscape. The village area contains historical traces and paths through the landscape; natural areas can be found in the wider region.
Landscape and trails
The Gårdlösaleden is twelve kilometres long. Its starting point and destination in Smedstorp can be reached by train, car or bicycle. Along the route, the trails pass archaeological remains such as ship settings and stone circles. Maps of the Gårdlösaleden are available on the information board next to Smedstorp railway station or in the old grocery shop immediately beside it.
For a shorter route, there is Smedstorp's motionsspår: a 3.5-kilometre, accessibility-adapted exercise loop that starts at the sports field and partly runs through woodland west of the village. The motionsspår is suitable for running and walking; benches are located along the entire route.
Culture and history
North of Smedstorp's railway station area are the church and the manor. This is where a varied cultural landscape begins, with clear traces of historical agriculture. The railway station building is a red-brick structure dating from 1908 to 1910. Together with the historic built environment along the old main streets in the centre, Smedstorp preserves the characteristic features of a railway settlement from around the turn of the twentieth century.
Smedstorp Church was built in 1867 on the site of the former church. Inside is a pulpit dating from 1597; in addition, the Bingska gravmonumentet is unique in its design in Skåne. Smedstorp Manor is also part of the village's history: from the fourteenth century onwards, it was owned by the Danish Bing family.
The cultural present includes artisans, artists and galleries. Artistic activity in Smedstorp is particularly high during the Easter art tour. In the wider region, a runic inscription on a silver brooch from the grave of the Silver Girl dates from the second century and is among Sweden's oldest runic inscriptions.
Today, only the private main building of Smedstorp Castle remains; it is not open to the public. The built-up and agricultural land around the grave of the Silver Girl may also not be entered without the landowner's permission.
Nature in the wider area
In the wider region around Smedstorp, Listarumsåsen is a wooded moraine ridge on the open plain north of the village. The century-old woodland is dominated by oak and beech and offers two short circular walking trails.
Also in the wider region, Ljungavången Nature Reserve has no facilities for outdoor recreation. It protects rare and threatened amphibians, including one of Sweden's largest populations of spadefoot toads. The frogs' distinctive spring song can be heard there from a distance.
Leisure by the water
Smedstorps Friluftsbad has a 25-metre pool, a paddling pool and a slide. The site also includes a twelve-hole mini-golf course. Swimming lessons are offered at Smedstorps Friluftsbad.
