Sävsjöström combines traces of its industrial history with cycle routes, lakes and species-rich woodland landscapes. Those looking for a mix of culture, activity and nature experiences for their holiday will find various options here for planning their days. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, the key consideration is therefore which of these aspects should shape the stay.

Industrial History around Bruksboden and Smedjan

The industrial heritage environment in Sävsjöström includes an information board at Bruksboden. It provides information about 17th-century mills, the ironworks, sawmills and modern forestry. The old Bruksboden next to the former industrial area dates from around 1800. At Smedjan, you can also still see several buildings from the ironworks era.

These places give the trip a historical focus without requiring you to forgo nature experiences. The information board is a suitable starting point for placing the site's development in context. Those interested in the connection between the landscape and working history can combine the historical traces with a cycle tour or a stay at one of the lakes.

Cycle Routes with Different Highlights

Several cycle routes are available for an active day. The route between Sävsjöström and Målerås is 15 kilometres long and follows the old narrow-gauge railway line. The eight-kilometre cycle route between Sävsjöström and Lenhovda also follows a railway line. Sweden's last narrow-gauge steam train ran along it. Mellersta Fallet is considered the birthplace of Sävsjöström and adds a historical perspective.

The 20-kilometre cycle route between Sävsjöström and Åseda passes through a lake-rich landscape with changing birdlife. In spring, this includes black grouse and capercaillie displays; the northern section features flower-rich meadows. There are information boards at the starting points of this route and at several particularly interesting locations along the way. This allows you to choose the cycle tour not only by its length but also by its landscape and historical impressions.

Swimming Area and Nature Reserves

Sävsjöström has a municipal swimming area at Lake Alstern. It is located at Kärringaviken and offers a view across Lake Alstern. Facilities include a sandy beach, jetties, grassy areas, changing rooms and a barbecue area. This makes it possible to plan a day by the water differently from a longer cycle tour or a day of historical discoveries.

The nature reserves also offer different highlights. Kärngölsområdet is located three kilometres south-east of Sävsjöström. There you will find hills with old, primeval-looking coniferous forest, wetlands, pine swamp forests and small forest lakes. The mainly pine-dominated forest is up to 140 years old; there is also a good chance of seeing and hearing capercaillie there. In Våraskruv Nature Reserve, the old cultural landscape on the slopes towards Lake Våraskruvssjön has largely been preserved. Outside Sävsjöström, you can hike along Lake Våraskruvssjön there.

Choosing the Right Base

When searching for accommodation, you can first consider whether you want to focus on historical sites, a particular cycle route, the swimming area or the nature reserves. A trip with several interests benefits from clear day planning: the route lengths provide guidance, as do the different landscapes. This keeps your choice of accommodation linked to your desired holiday pace without inferring unsubstantiated proximity or facilities from individual attractions.

If you would like to compare other places, you can also find Alstermo, Lenhovda, Möcklehult, Fröseke, Åseda, Klavreström, Norrhult and Älghult.
