Åseda – Glass, Forest Trails and Rail Bikes
Accommodation in Åseda
Åseda combines Swedish glassmaking, historic churches and varied trails to create a destination offering many different experiences. You can plan a cultural excursion here, take a rail bike ride through the countryside or spend a day by the water. For families who do not want every day of their holiday to be the same, the town offers a range of opportunities to plan the trip at their own pace.
Culture and Glassmaking in Åseda
One special event in the annual calendar is Olsmässan, which is celebrated in Åseda every year at the end of July. If you are travelling at this time, you can combine your trip with this local festival. Åseda kyrka also tells of the town’s long history: the church has stood in the same place since the late 12th century. Inside, there is a late-medieval winged altarpiece from the 15th century. Kapell Nytorpet is a smaller church at the forest cemetery on the outskirts of Åseda and adds another historical perspective on the town.
Åseda’s craft tradition includes two different glass experiences. Persson & Persson operates a glassworks with a gallery at Ösjöbol 5, Åseda. Hauges Hantverksglas in Kulltorp Haga, Åseda, sells utility and art glass made from old bottles. These bottles are reshaped without being melted down. A visit therefore offers the chance to learn about both the production and the creative reuse of glass.
You can book tickets via the website for film screenings and live broadcasts at Folkets Hus Åseda. This also makes it possible to add a cultural programme to your stay if you would like to attend an event after a day outdoors.
Forest Trails, Water and the Narrow-Gauge Railway
The yellow trail in Åseda is 3.8 km long and runs through the forest. It is illuminated until 10 p.m. Åseda’s illuminated running track leads through the forest and past Brinkagölen. This information helps you distinguish between a walk along the yellow trail and a run on your own route, without limiting your stay to a single activity.
At Björkåkrabadet, north of Åseda, there is a bathing area with jetties. Good parking is available at the end of Västra Kyrkogatan. The bathing area can therefore be a destination for a full day of its own if, when planning your trip, you would like to set aside time by the water in addition to culture and exercise.
The narrow-gauge railway between Åseda and Hultsfred offers an unusual way to experience the landscape: rail bikes are available there. Rentals take place at Åseda station, at the red hut belonging to the narrow-gauge railway trail next to the car park. The route from Åseda passes through pine forest and a changing landscape of meadows before reaching the small village of Hultanäs. Åseda is the southern terminus of the railway; only the narrow-gauge line remains.
Which accommodation suits your plans?
When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Åseda, you can first consider which experiences you want to make the focus of your stay. For culture and glassmaking, a travel plan including visits to Åseda and Ösjöbol is an obvious choice. If you prefer to stay active, you can make the yellow trail, the running track and the rail bike ride the centre of your trip. Björkåkrabadet offers an additional option for structuring your day.
