Holiday apartment in Habo – nature, hiking trails and culture

Habo combines a dramatic bedrock plateau with lush beech forests and a stark, mountain-like landscape. In addition, there are numerous natural areas, trails through varied landscapes, bathing lakes and distinctive cultural sites. The municipality of Habo is home to a total of 23 nature reserves.

Nature

In the Domneån Nature Reserve, a circular trail just over 1.5 kilometres long leads to rest areas and viewpoints. Wildlife is also part of this natural environment: beavers can sometimes be spotted there, and with a little luck, grazing moose can be seen. Grey wagtails breed by the water, while dippers can occasionally be observed diving for insects.

Dumme mosse has ten kilometres of boardwalks. Five kilometres of these have been adapted and are accessible for wheelchair users. The Fiskebäck Nature Reserve offers a circular trail of about one kilometre, the first 200 metres of which have been adapted and are accessible for wheelchair users. Baremosse adds an almost 400-hectare wetland area, consisting largely of marshland and serving as a breeding ground for several bird species. In April and May, with a little luck, visitors can observe the courtship flight of the black grouse.

Trails

Stages 7 and 8 of the Västra Vätterleden trail pass through Habo Municipality, leading from First Camp Hökensås via Fagerhult to Mullsjö. The Norra S:t Sigfridsleden also runs through the municipality and forms part of an extensive European network of pilgrimage trails.

The Högamoleden trail passes through Domsand and the Domneåns Nature Reserve. This brings together different types of trails: a circular route with rest areas and viewpoints, long boardwalks through marshland, and hiking and pilgrimage trails integrated into wider regional networks.

Water

At Lake Vättern, Domsandsbadet has a long sandy beach with two bathing jetties. Facilities include changing rooms, toilets and a kiosk, with a small marina next to the beach. Furusjöbadet has a ramp into the water for wheelchair users. The bathing lake is considered family-friendly and offers shallow water, bathing jetties and a large playground.

Baskarpsbadet also has a long sandy beach with clear water.

Leisure

The Gränsenstugan outdoor recreation area has a three-kilometre illuminated cross-country ski trail. When there is sufficient snow, it is groomed for cross-country skiing. Parking spaces are located next to the hut and the start of the ski trail. The facilities at Gränsenstugan also include an outdoor gym and a barbecue area.

From April to September, Habo Discgolf welcomes everyone interested to its weekly round of golf, explicitly including non-members. At Kyrkekvarn, visitors can ride Icelandic horses. The leisure activities mentioned therefore range from cross-country skiing and disc golf to horse riding.

Culture and history

Habo Church is an unusually splendid rural church with richly painted interior decoration. Brandstorp Church preserves one of the very few surviving wooden cemetery enclosures in the country. Fiskebäck Chapel is believed to stand on the site where a wooden church was already built in the 12th century.

Habo hembygdsgård is home to eight buildings of local historical significance, set in a scenic park. They were moved there from various parts of the municipality. The heritage farm serves homemade fika with seven varieties of cake. It also contains five buildings, including a smithy and a unique wooden tent that was exhibited at the World's Fair in Paris in 1876. The museum there includes, among other things, an exhibition about shipping on Lake Vättern.
