Sävsjö combines tangible experiences with a local history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The town's character is shaped by Familjebadet, flower-filled plantings in the centre, paths through Sanatorieskogen, several cycling routes and the historic surroundings of Eksjöhovgård. In addition, it is located on the southern main railway line between Malmö and Stockholm.

Water and townscape

Familjebadet offers a water park with a baby pool, whirlpool, slide, cave and waterfall. Swimming courses for children and adults are also offered there. In the centre of Sävsjö, perennial plantings between pavements, car parks and shops create a flower-filled environment. These central plantings contribute to biodiversity and support pollinating insects. The town also has its own gardening tradition: Sävsjös Trädgård represents a gardening tradition developed by the municipality and is known among garden enthusiasts throughout Sweden.

Tunneltorget is a small square and park at a pedestrian tunnel under the railway in the centre of Sävsjö. Tunneltorget features a fountain artwork and plenty of seating.

Nature and hiking trails

Sanatorieskogen has walking paths, a camping area with permanent wind shelters and a footbridge over the stream. The forest's name comes from Sävsjö's sanatorium, built in 1907. The Höglandsleden also leads into the town: it includes a hiking section from Hultsjö to Sävsjö. One section of the Höglandsleden also includes the burial site in Skrapstad.

Culture and history

Eksjöhovgård was first mentioned in written sources in 1287. The ruins of Eksjöhovgård can be reached via a pedestrian bridge. The Eksjöhovgårdsområdet in Sävsjö is also home to the Skomakarmuseum. There is also a Statarstuga there; it was presumably the only one in the entire municipality during the 20th century. The Statarstuga was shown by arrangement with Sävsjö Hembygdsförening.

The Firefighting Museum presents the history of fire protection in Sävsjö through old fire engines, older equipment, photographs and other documentation from the early 20th century. The Firefighting Museum had no regular opening hours; a guided tour could be booked. The development of the historic surroundings also includes Sävsjö Hembygdsförening: it bought the workshop equipment and moved it in 2007 to the old pig house in the Eksjöhovgårdsområdet.

Cycling routes and landscape

There are several cycling routes of varying lengths, with clearly defined itineraries. The 22-kilometre Sävsjö–Skepperstad cycling route goes via Torset and Vallsjö before returning to Sävsjö. The 30-kilometre Sävsjö–Vallsjön runt cycling route starts in Sävsjö and goes around Vallsjön. The 28-kilometre cycling route from Sävsjö to Bringetofta passes through Norra Ljunga.

Another route through the landscape is Sävsjö Häradsväg. It passes lakes, forests, fields and meadows, runs between Vallsjö and Norra Ljunga, and is part of the history of Njudung.
