Vrigstad – Cycling Routes, History and Special Experiences
Accommodation in Vrigstad
Vrigstad combines varied routes through the landscape with a local history dating back to the 12th century. If you are looking for an apartment or holiday home for your trip, you can choose your accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most: short bike tours, longer routes with different surfaces, paddling, historic buildings or local traditions.
Cycling, Walking Trails and Paddling
For a manageable bike tour, the Lundholmen cycling route starts in Vrigstad and is 8 kilometres long. It passes several smaller lakes outside the Vrigstad area. Another option is the 7-kilometre Slättsjön cycling route. It runs along asphalt or other paved paths. In addition, a walking trail around Slättsjön is part of Vrigstad’s local recreational areas. Together, these two routes offer different ways to experience the surroundings by bike or on foot.
Anyone planning a longer and more varied route can consider the cycling route from Vrigstad to Nydala. It is 40 kilometres long, suitable for mountain bikes, and runs along forest tracks, gravel roads and asphalt. There is also a specific option on the water: the section of the Vrigstadsån from Vrigstad to the Långö power station is suitable for paddling, as it has no dams.
Church History and Historic Places
The present-day Vrigstad kyrka was built in 1865. The first church in Vrigstad was built as early as the 12th century. The local history therefore offers two clearly separated points in time that can be combined during a culturally oriented stay.
Another historic destination is Hembygdsstugan Gröndal. The building was moved here from Kohult in the municipality of Svenarum in 1871. There is also a second building on the site, probably dating from the 18th century, which served partly as a bakery and partly as a servants’ quarters. The cautious dating is just as much a part of the house’s history as its former use.
Near Vrigstad lies the Biskopsbo burial ground, with remains from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. It comprises 36 burial mounds, 18 circular stone settings, four stone circles and three standing stones. Those interested in different periods will find a specific complement here to the more recent local history.
Market Tradition and Kafferep
There is a written document concerning Vrigstads Marknad from 1591. The market takes place twice a year, in May and August. These two dates are therefore important points of reference when planning a trip. Gamla Bankgården also offers a traditional Kafferep with seven varieties of cake. In 2022, the new exhibition “Vrigstadentreprenörer – hur Vrigstad blev Vrigstad” was inaugurated there. The exhibition is therefore part of the more recent history of the town and complements the culinary side with an insight into Vrigstad’s development.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
If you are travelling with different interests, first compare your planned priorities before looking for an apartment: the 7- and 8-kilometre routes contrast with the 40-kilometre route over terrain suitable for mountain bikes. In addition, there is the walking trail by Slättsjön, the paddling section of the Vrigstadsån, and the historical and culinary themes.
