Nässjö combines expansive nature with an unusually visible history of art and railways. Höglandsleden is a 44 Swedish mile-long nature experience that extends across the entire Småland Highlands. Five stages of this trail pass through Nässjö Municipality. Höglandsleden is primarily intended for hiking, but it can also be cycled.

Nature and Trails

On Höglandsleden, the route passes through extensive forests, open fields, meadows, lakes and marshes. Along the trail there are shelters and overnight cabins; the trail is also signposted and marked in orange. Information is available for the individual stages about their lengths, as well as about arriving by bus or train, parking options, nature and culture along the trail, and shelters, lakes and rest areas.

Another focus is the Lövhult area. Hiking, cycling, disc golf and cross-country skiing are possible there. Lövhult Nature Reserve consists mostly of forest and also includes meadows and pastureland. Lövhultabäcken, along with smaller streams and brooks, runs through the area. Numerous marked trails, including some wheelchair-accessible trails, lead through the nature reserve; there are also shelters, fire pits and picnic areas.

Lövhult is located close to Nässjö and can be reached by bicycle, car or bus. From the “Nässjö Lövhult” bus stop, it is approximately 1 kilometre on foot to the nature reserve. In addition to the longer trails of Höglandsleden, this provides access to shorter natural areas with different types of paths in the surroundings of Nässjö.

Art and Urban History

Nässjö konsthall presents contemporary art from local, regional, national and international perspectives and holds six to eight art exhibitions annually. It is located in Kulturhuset Pigalle and can be visited free of charge. The programme includes artist talks, cultural evenings, lectures, concerts and workshops.

A signposted street-art route also runs through Nässjö. Along the route, visitors can view murals and read stories about the unique works. The murals are presented as expressions of the city’s rich cultural life and industrial heritage; a new mural is added almost every year. Several statues and sculptures are located in the central parts of Nässjö and can be reached on foot from Nässjö resecentrum.

Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum explains when the railway came to Nässjö in the 19th century and what significance it had for the city’s development. The museum has extensive documentation on the history of the railway. The collection ranges from small uniform badges and model railways to full-size locomotives and carriages. The Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum association regularly organises journeys on a historic train, in which a dining car serves dinner during the journey.
