Strömsund combines extensive nature experiences with accessible geology, prominent transport routes and opportunities on the water. Those planning a trip with varied daily rhythms will find both a seven-kilometre boardwalk and an approximately week-long canoe tour, a nature reserve with hiking trails and an interesting route through the fells. When choosing a holiday apartment or another type of accommodation, it is therefore worth first deciding which experiences you have planned and then looking for a suitable location in Strömsund.

Nature trails through varied landscapes

The Fågelvägen nature trail is a seven-kilometre, easy-to-walk boardwalk between Strömsund campsite and the bird lake with an observation tower near Tullingsås. The route passes through moorland, boggy birch forest, dense spruce forest, waterside landscapes and overgrown pastureland. As a result, the character of the trail changes noticeably along the way.

The Per-Johansabodarna nature reserve also offers hiking trails. It is located three kilometres from Strömsund Church. A signposted nature trail also starts at the campsite in Näsviken, passes through the Per-Johansabodarna nature reserve and continues southwards. The Båthushöjden nature reserve is home to pine trees that are up to 300 years old. These different nature destinations make a place to stay a good choice from which to organise your excursions according to your preferred daily itinerary.

Water, golf and major road routes

A 170-kilometre canoe route runs along Ströms Vattudal between Ankarede and Strömsund. The canoe tour takes approximately one week; a canoe trolley is required for the route because it includes lengthy overland portages. It is therefore a separate, longer tour project rather than a short activity on the water.

For a shorter sporting diversion, there is Strömsund golf course. The course is located in a pine forest next to Strömsund campsite and has nine holes. Alternative tees on all holes create an 18-hole layout depending on the route played. This allows different interests to be accommodated during the same trip without every holiday day having to focus on the same activity.

Strömsund is also the starting point of the Wilderness Road. The road begins in Strömsund and runs via Gäddede and the Stekenjokk mountain massif through Kultsjödalen and onward to Vilhelmina in Västerbotten. Strömsund campsite is located on the E45, one kilometre outside Strömsund. Strömsund Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge carrying European route E45 over Ströms Vattudal in Strömsund, in northern Jämtland.

Geology in the heart of town

The Geologiska trädgården in the centre of Strömsund presents the local geology using maps, cross-sectional depictions of the Earth and the history of the mountain range. A 500-million-year-old trilobite fossil found in limestone near Strömsund offers a particularly tangible glimpse into this geological history. There is no admission charge for the Geologiska trädgården in the centre of Strömsund.

Landön is also located immediately next to the centre of Strömsund and can be reached on foot from the local heritage museum. This allows you to combine nature, sightseeing and geological topics when planning your trip. A holiday apartment in Strömsund can serve as a base for these different interests; the best location depends on whether you are primarily planning trails, water activities, proximity to the town centre or a longer round trip.
