Holiday accommodation in Strömsund – Wilderness Road and karst landscapes

Strömsund combines an exceptional road route with karst landscapes, wetlands, waterways and historic sites. The Wilderness Road is Sweden’s highest paved road and begins in the south at the E45 in Strömsund. Its entire loop is 500 kilometres long and passes through the municipalities of Strömsund, Vilhelmina and Dorotea.

Nature

The Bjurälven Nature Reserve encompasses Scandinavia’s largest karst area; the Bjurälven River flows partly underground there. From the car park at Leipikvattnet farm, a three-kilometre hiking trail leads through lush alpine vegetation to the karst area of the Bjurälven Nature Reserve. This means that alpine flora, unusual rock formations and the underground course of the river are all found close together along a manageable route.

Vackermyren Nature Reserve consists of four calcareous wetlands and peatlands. There is a 450-metre-long boardwalk suitable for wheelchairs, walking frames and prams. An accessible dry toilet is located at the entrance, while the peatland has a rest area with benches. Hällingsåfallet waterfall plunges into a gorge more than 40 metres deep, adding a distinctly different landscape to the natural attractions.

Outdoor activities

At Hällingsåfallet, there is a five-kilometre hiking tour that begins downstream at the car park by Hällingsån and Hällarna. Guided tours are available in Korallgrottan, whose passages extend for five kilometres, making it Sweden’s longest cave. Along Björnvägen, you can observe wildlife independently, including bears, moose, deer and birds of prey.

Water-based and winter activities are also part of what the municipality offers: In Strömsund, fishing is available in mountain waters, large lakes and forest lakes. You can go paddling on Ströms Vattudal, while kilometres of prepared snowmobile trails provide another form of activity. A seven-kilometre-long, easy-to-walk boardwalk also runs between Strömsund campsite and the bird lake with its observation tower near Tullingsås.

Culture

Strömsunds hembygdsgård is an open-air museum with around thirty buildings, exhibitions and historic settings. A Christmas market is held on the grounds every year on the first Sunday of Advent. The site is easy to reach by bus and car, and large parts of the grounds have been adapted for accessibility. Jätten Jorm, a six-metre-high statue, also stands there on the grounds of Strömsunds hembygdsgård in Strömsund.

The Geologiska trädgården presents the geology of the region on maps and the history of the mountain range using cross-sections of the earth. Alongside the natural areas, this provides an accessible way to learn about the geological foundations and the formation of the mountain landscape.
