Gäddede: Nature, Views and the Wilderness Road
Accommodation in Gäddede
Gäddede combines nature experiences, viewpoints and the Wilderness Road. Anyone planning a trip through Frostviken can choose between short discoveries in the village, hiking destinations and a longer round trip. A holiday apartment in Gäddede is a suitable starting point for anyone who wants to combine their stay with regional impressions and varied day planning.
Discover nature and culture in Frostviken
A good place to start is the tourist information centre: Frostvikens Fjällpark at the tourist information centre in Gäddede showcases plants from the region. Frostviken Nature Information and the library are located in the same premises as the tourist information centre. Visitors can gain an impression of Frostviken’s nature and culture here. This makes the location interesting if you want to understand your trip not only through its landscapes, but also through the region’s distinctive features.
An unusual discovery is the possible “provkryp” at Korallgrottan. The term refers to a specific visitor activity at Frostviken Nature Information and complements the general orientation with a special nature-related topic. This means a day in Gäddede can be arranged in different ways: with a short visit in the village, with information about Frostviken or with an excursion into the landscape.
Views and trails around Gäddede
West of Gäddede, in the direction of the Norwegian border, lies Muruhatten, a distinctive terrain feature. The hike there can begin at the school in Gäddede. At the wind shelter by the illuminated trail, there is a blue starting cross and an information sheet.
Another option is Brännklumpen in the Brattli area of Gäddede. The viewpoint is easily accessible and offers views over large parts of Frostviken. Depending on the route chosen, the trail there is approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometres long. Brännklumpen therefore offers a different type of excursion from Muruhatten: you can choose between a distinctive terrain feature with the hike starting at the school and a trail of approximately 1 to 1.5 kilometres to a viewpoint.
Two ski and fitness trails also begin in the village centre at Frostviksskolan. This starting point may be particularly interesting for your travel planning if you want to combine different activities. Depending on your preferred pace of travel, your stay in Gäddede can therefore focus more on trails in the village, viewpoint experiences or the wider landscape.
Gäddede on the Wilderness Road
Gäddede lies on the Wilderness Road, a 500-kilometre circular route. It runs from Strömsund in northern Jämtland via Gäddede to Vilhelmina in southern Lapland and connects to the E45 via Dorotea. The scenic road is Sweden’s highest paved road and reaches 876 metres above sea level at its highest point.
The entire Wilderness Road can be travelled from 6 June to 15 October. If you choose this circular route as the focus of your trip, you should take this period into account when planning. Accommodation in Gäddede can be considered part of a larger route, while a stay focusing on Muruhatten, Brännklumpen and the facilities in the village has a more local character. The deciding factor is therefore whether you mainly want to be on the road or discover Frostviken from a fixed base.
