Segart: Hiking, History and Fiestas in the Sierra Calderona

Segart lies in the heart of the Sierra Calderona. La Mola de Segart is considered Segart’s most outstanding natural landmark.

Nature and Trails

The Sierra Calderona around Segart offers hiking trails. One of the marked trails mentioned for Segart is the camino de la Mola. The linear GR 10 E02 Segart–Serra stage begins at Plaça de l'Ajuntament in Segart and is 9.80 km long. Its main route follows the old path, climbs through the Barranc del Garbí and overcomes the difference in elevation via a quarry to Pla del Garbí next to Puntal de l’Abella.

The Ruta de las Cadenas from Segart to the Mirador del Garbí is a route just under 3 kilometres long that leads through a rocky pass to the summit of Garbí. The Route de los 6, 7, 8 o 9 Picos de la Calderona passes through the municipal areas of Albalat dels Tarongers, Segart and Gilet and begins at the Santo Espíritu recreational area. The route Recorrido por las fuentes de Segart is easy, suitable for all target groups and leads to the springs of Segart, with up to nine water sources. The different route lengths and types provide various points of reference for planning your day.

The Canal del Garbí section is a climbing route, not an officially approved hiking trail. It is not suitable for people without the necessary technical skills and protective equipment. The GR 10 variant through the Canal del Garbí was expected to lose its official approval in the following days; its trail markings and signs were then to be removed.

The Font del Salt is almost on the border between Segart and Nàquera and can form a waterfall during periods of heavy rainfall. The Font de Jaume is located on the CV-329 access road to Segart and has been restored.

Culture and History

The Calvario de Segart is a viewpoint with a hermitage and is considered a recommended hike. The Ermita de la Santa Creu is located near the Segart cemetery at the end of the Calvario climb, which begins near the church square; the path passes cypress trees and Stations of the Cross decorated with painted tiles.

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción in Segart dates from the 18th century. The former public laundry of Segart is located next to the town hall and can be visited. The Castillo de Segart is a fortress of Muslim origin. The still-visible remains of the outer walls and main tower indicate that the Castillo was part of a larger defensive complex.

Major Fiestas

Segart’s Major Fiestas include masses, open-air dances, a children’s parade and a paella competition. On the last day, a communal cauldron of arròs amb fesols i naps is prepared for the entire village; a procession also takes place every day. Segart’s Major Fiestas take place on the last Sunday in July and on the first Monday and Tuesday in August.
